The Unknown
As we know,
There are known knowns.
There are things we know we know.
We also know
There are known unknowns.
That is to say
We know there are some things
We do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns,
The ones we don't know
We don't know.

Zetatalk (MLP)

Hoax, cult or illness, the zetatalk is a phenomenon that some of you may be aware of. Zetatalk is a typical cult in many
aspects - prophecy of a major cataclysmic event soon to take place, strong leadership, denial of science and a grand
conspiracy theory involving the major governments and corporations, mainstream religions and alien visitations. What makes
zetatalk unique is that it is based on the Internet, meetings are held on IRC chat rooms and indoctrination of weaker minds is done through a web site. What makes it interesting is that you can follow the events that are taking place inside
the cult - in the last few weeks of its existence - after about 7
years since its appearance.

Librarians Use Shredders to Counter New F.B.I. Powers (MLP)

"It used to be a librarian would be pictured with a book," said Ms. Snider, the branch manager, slightly exasperated as she hunched over the wastebasket. "Now it is a librarian with a shredder."
Librarians in America, specifically those in Santa Cruz, California, have resorted to shredding nearly all documents or records of any sort in order to counter the United States' new Patriot Act (EFF critique), a law passed after 9/11 which significantly broadened the federal authorities' ability to tap into public information in the name of anti-terrorism.
Many libraries have begun distributing leaflets to visitors which detail their objections to the increased F.B.I. power and explain that librarians are in the process of reviewing their files to ensure that any and all data they have about borrowing and computer usage histories is absolutely necessary to their operation.

A BBC News story relates that a New Zealand marine biologist has discovered the mostly intact body of a colossal squid, Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni --- that's bigger than a mere giant squid --- in the seas off Antarctica. Its discoverer believes that a full grown animal would be more than twenty yards long.

Checkerboard Illusion (MLP)

Digging through old IRC logs I managed to re-discover an old favorite link: The Checkershadow Illusion by Edward Adelson. It's by far the most compelling instance of the familiar sort of static image optical illusion that I've ever encountered. The illusion is so believable you might find yourself doing as I did and whipping out Photoshop to prove it to yourself. As an added bonus, Adelson links to a research paper he wrote which analyzes in great detail the hard-wired pathways in the brain that allow for exactly this sort of illusion.

Iraqi Military Tactics - An Atrocity or Necessity? (MLP)

Where do you stand on Iraq's unconventional tactics of war? American leaders and citizens have expressed outrage and anger over Iraq's use of war tactics involving deception, incognito, and suicide. Their tactics have evolved and adapted to the dynamic American war plan - shifting from pretending to surrender as a means to engage American and British troops, all the way to now committing suicide attacks against stationary troops.

More Doctors Smoke Camels (MLP)

Advertising for cigarettes has come a long way, baby, to borrow the end of a Virginia Slims cigarette slogan I remember seeing growing up. I also recall being bombarded with Joe Camel, the 'cool' cartoon camel who smoked. (Although I've heard he isn't doing too well). The Internet allows us a glimpse of cigarette advertising (and stories) through the years. Some audio and video is available as well.
Claimed the copy on one ad scanned from a 1950s era edition of Popular Mechanics magazine, "I had plenty of experience with different cigarettes during the war ... it's Camels with me!"
