Design vs. Build (Diaries)

By k31
Tue Apr 22nd, 2003 at 10:03:31 PM EST

This is a short writeup on why many people I know don't like developing software.

And a weird (unrelated) poll thingy.

Druggle (Diaries)

Wed Mar 26th, 2003 at 04:09:27 PM EST

So, I'm planning to install FreeBSD. Actually, I'm downloading the ISOness for 5.0 as I wrt this. [And my spelling has gotten even worse, due to temporary sickness!]

Totally unrelated stuff in the extended copy.

And, a poll: who do you say that you think I am?

Four Agreements (Diaries)

By k31
Tue Feb 11th, 2003 at 04:55:02 PM EST

There is a book called "The Four Agreements", which is about just that; and a bit more. One of the points it made was to do your best, no more, and no less.

Herein, I rant passionately about whatever comes to mind.

Btw, there is a poll.

Stealing my ideas (Diaries)

By k31
Sat Jan 25th, 2003 at 12:19:29 PM EST

Great minds think alike,
fools seldom differ.

Reference:

Hawkes notes that 75 percent of the planet is covered with water and just a fraction of it has been explored. It is the sea, not space, that is our final frontier, he said.

"Man's future is in the oceans," Hawkes said. "I think we're going to find that flight is the key to opening that."

Dead America (Diaries)

By k31
Thu Jan 16th, 2003 at 05:06:24 PM EST

I'm a brilliant (by local standards) Barbadian. Barbados has its currency tied to the U.S. dollar, and is a hub for the Caribbean region. Sayings such as "Uncle Sam is dead" were fairly common here for years, and have nothing to do with "9/11".

This article is a half-rant which explains why America is largely considered a dead country by non-americans.

Disclaimer: This article is intentionally generalised and harsh. I actually have American friends (or, did, before I wrote this) but don't have any respect whatso-ever for what America as a country has become, reguardless of what the good, but non-empowered-to-change-the-country individuals may have accomplished for the Greater Good.

Update (Diaries)

By k31
Sun Jan 12th, 2003 at 11:58:19 PM EST

Changing to the release build did get rid of the tons of warnings which I mentioned in my last K5 Diary (http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2003/1/9/5174/53410).

I have yet to try the map thingy in anger, because I decided to redesign the parser, vm, and atomic interpeter a bit based on feedback from the last diary and my experience with my current one. That, and I've been busy preparing to resume my electronics course;

looking at atomic physics, and maths. A bit about that "Higher Science" stuff below.

Help: STL map and VC++6.0 (Diaries)

By k31
Thu Jan 9th, 2003 at 05:17:04 AM EST

So, I'm having... difficulty getting the STL map thingy to work with VC++, v. 6.0. It turns out that the problem is moot in this case, vector thingies actually did a better job... However, map is kool... details in extended copy.

Managed Insanity (Diaries)

By k31
Mon Jan 6th, 2003 at 05:20:43 AM EST

It seems that I've overcome the appearance of a manic depressive, without compromising on that too-many-ideas type of character that seems to lead to the mood swings, so I'm sharing.

Links about programming stuff also, and whatever I can think up before dawn.
