Subject: Re Editorial- Craven UN Caves InJune 16th The Editor
Your editorial regarding the UN caving in to US
pressure to exempt it from the International Criminal Court is well stated but
it would not be the first time that the United Nations has granted effective
immunity from prosecution for war crimes. Despite the rhetoric, the UN, through
its international war crimes tribunals for Yugoslavia and for
Rwanda has established a culture of impunity for certain war
criminals and thereby given them a green light to commit further war
crimes. The UN prosecutor, Carla Del Ponte, like her precessor, Louise
Arbour, has refused to indict any member of the KLA or Nato for war
crimes despite overwhelming evidence in her possession that the KLA
and Nato, particularly the US, committed war crimes both before and in
the illegal, immoral 78 day bombing of the people of Yugoslavia in 1999 as
was documented by many groups including the group of lawyers and
jurists lead by Canadian law professor Michael Mandel. She has also refused
to indict any member of the Tutsi dominated Rwandan Patriotic
Front for massive war crimes including genocide against the Hutu
people committed by them in the events of 1994 in Rwanda despite the fact
she also has overwhelming evidence of these crimes. The connection of
course is that both tribunals are controlled by the US and serve its interests
and so only the enemies of the US are charged. Its friends, no matter how
criminal they are, enjoy immunity from prosecution and in the case of the KLA in
Kosovo and Macedonia and the Tutsi led forces in the Congo continue to
commit war crimes, backed by the US and in its interests, while the world press
looks the other way or pretends not to understand.
