[LEARNING BIT]   [STORY BIT]

©BBC 1981 Learning Bit

There's a new song about Miss Hawk in the Story So Far bit:
CHARACTERS SONG 4: See the Dark Towers Song Book for lyrics and grabs.

In the library, Jenny's got the Time Road up again. She's decided that the Golden Book must be even older than the Tall Knight, so it's been added to the very bottom of the road. Jenny has some random old books in the library and she shows us the funny plate writing and gold leaf. Jenny has a label for them, saying 'book from a long time ago', but the E flies off and the sign doesn't make sense any more. Wordy arrives with the song book and has a look at the Magic E song:

Jenny and Wordy are playing an extremely simplified version of Scrabble, making words with Magic E modifying an I. Jenny manages to make a word but Wordy can't manage it. He starts to sulk and gives up, so Jenny decides to go over the Sentences song again, and this is followed immediately by a new song with Mr Big and the Lollypop Lady:
SENTENCES SONG 1: See the Dark Towers Song Book for lyrics and grabs.
QUESTIONS SONG 1: See the Dark Towers Song Book for lyrics and grabs.

Down in his bin, Wordy decides to tell a joke: "what kind of keys do ghosts use?" (and if you don't know the payoff to that then you've no right reading this). Wordy is working on his word wall again, this time with -ed words, and Bill the Brickie is doing the same in his song:
BILL THE BRICKIE SONG 2: See the Dark Towers Song Book for lyrics and grabs.
(by the way, out of context and without the animation it sounds very much like Mr Griffiths is shouting 'Arsed!' in the fourth stanza.)

Back in the library it's around Halloween (this was the last episode shown before Halloween 1981), and Jenny has a wall frieze of a ghostly picture alphabet drawn by a kid called Nicola in Manchester. She suggests making your own picture alphabet with different pictures. Then it's time to return to the story.

Story Bit

Edward is out at the well turning the old wheel round. Miss Hawk joins him and he explains that he's looking for the old wheels mentioned in the book clue. He doesn't understand how a book can be a treasure, but Miss Hawk explains that it's so old and rare that it's probably worth "more than a million pounds". Edward has pulled something up from the well. Inside the bucket there's... an old shoe.

Tracy is thinking about the clue herself. She thinks the wheels in question might be in the old coach house, so she goes off down there to investigate. She tries calling for Edward on the way but can't find him, so goes off alone. Inside the coach house it's dark and ghostly. Towser chases round the place while Tracy has a look inside some of the coaches. Under the seat of one she spots a bit of paper, but she can't read it cos it's too dark. Just then she hears some people coming in and decides to hide inside the coach.

Benger and Bunce wander in, thinking they've found a secret meeting place. They discuss which of the things from the house they're going to steal, but say they have all the best stuff already. Benger reveals the plan: they're going to pile all of the valuable stuff from Dark Towers into their van then set fire to the house so it seems like it's all been destroyed. Tracy just realises the significance of the Friendly Ghost's message about "two bees buzzing together" when she sneezes and is discovered by the two men. She threatens to tell Lord Dark of their plans as they march her off to see him, but she doesn't notice them slip an old locket into her pocket.
