Recently, I had time to kill in Budapest, which I did by driving 300 kilometers to Romania.
A brand-new four-lane highway, probably built with EU money, runs to the southeastern town of Szeged, where it abruptly comes to an end. Signs to Romania and Serbia end too, and, if they do appear, they point to Bucharest and Belgrade, the distant capitals, rather than towns just across the border.
