Volume License and Online Services KeysPublished: March 24, 2003 | Updated: July 19, 2006 Microsoft includes product activation technology in some products sold through original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and retail channels. Most licenses acquired through Microsoft Volume Licensing do not need to be activated. However, Volume Licensing customers must enter a Volume License Key (VLK) or an Online Services Key (OSK) when installing from some Volume Licensing media. On This PageWhat Is a Volume License Key?A VLK is a product key that is issued to a specific customer under a specific license agreement. Each VLK is associated with a particular customer and type of product for which the customer is licensed. Use your VLKs when you are installing a product or creating a custom image for designing and maintaining a standardized desktop. An image created by using the VLK and Volume Licensing media can be reimaged onto any computer without requiring activation. Note VLKs can be used only with Volume Licensing media; they cannot be used with retail full packaged product or OEM CD media. What if I Can't Find My Volume License or Online Services Keys?If you are unable to obtain your VLK and OSK, call the Microsoft Activation Center for your country or region. You will need to provide your Volume License agreement information and proof of purchase when you call.

How Do I Deploy with a Volume License or Online Services Key and Volume Licensing Media?Volume Licensing media for affected products will no longer include a preconfigured product ID or a product key on the CD packaging. You must use the appropriate VLK or OSK for desktop and network administrator installations. The VLK or OSK is assigned to your organization and is intended for its sole use. You must take reasonable and appropriate measures to ensure that this product key is used only to install and distribute licenses pursuant to the terms of your agreement. Note Volume Licensing agreements cover only Windows client upgrade licenses, not the full Windows client operating system. Customers must have a qualifying underlying operating system license before Volume License software can be installed. |
