Story Bit - Part One

Billy lets the kitten go and anxiously waits by Ann's car for her to return. In the cottage Clive is worried that Billy might be with Ann, as he could identify Clive from the empty house. Carter is not happy about this, but as Ann rings the bell for a second time he has Clive open to door to her.

Ann spots Carter standing inside Miss Wood's cottage and immediately recognises him as the man who stole her newspaper messages. She also sees Miss Wood's bags open and the contents thrown about on the floor. She wants to know where Miss Wood is, and Clive offers to take a message in an effort to find out what she knows, but Ann replies that messages sometimes get lost - looking pointedly at Carter - and makes a hasty exit.

Ann dashes down the steps back to her car, where she finds Billy waiting and learns about the gold stuff on Carter's boat. Ann explains her suspicion that the King's Dragon is a gold arm-ring and that Miss Wood may have found it. Billy didn't see anything like that on the boat, but still thinks that they should go to the police. Ann wants to tell her editor about everything first, and tells Billy to watch the cottage in case Miss Wood comes back.

Learning Bit

Jack is giving dictation to an assistant, but breaks off to review some of the events in the story, including the kitten and the treasure found in Carter's boat.

Wordy appears dressed up as a ghost (or a "spook") with a song about the vowel combination -oo (-oo says boom boom boom / ask -oo to give you proof). He also demonstrates how the same letters can make different sounds, in "look" and "book", then in "spook".

There's a quick bit about elisions such as "couldn't" and a story using the digraph -sh about a boy and his great aunt: "there's no need to shout!". With a song about words ending in -er (-er makes do a doer) Wordy explains that he is a word-watcher, and we viewers are all wordwatchers too! Then Jack comes back and does some reading.

Story Bit - Part Two

Ann returns to the Hastings Times office, eager to tell her story. She finds a massive "see me" note on her desk from Jack Dunbar. She goes in to see him and tries to explain what she's been doing, but Jack is extremely angry that she's not been doing the job he asked her to do. He says that if she has a story then she needs to write it down.

Ann gets to work on her typewriter and puts together a story about her investigations so far, but she ends up with a lot of questions, including "Where is Miss Wood?" and "Where is the King's Dragon?". Dunbar is unimpressed and still angry with Ann. She doesn't have many facts in her story, and he wants to know why Miss Wood didn't tell anyone about the King's Dragon herself, if she had it. He tells her to produce both Miss Wood and the King's Dragon, then he'll print her story.

Back in the Old Town, Carter and Clive make their way out of the cottage. Billy, keeping watch from a distance, recognises Clive from their encounter in the empty house. He watches the two baddies walk away from the cottage - and so does Miss Wood, watching from even further away by telescope.
