The Director of Army AviationBrigadier Iain Thomson was commissioned into 1st Battalion the Black Watch in March 1978 following which he served as a platoon commander on operations in Belize and what was then Rhodesia.

After two years as a platoon instructor at the Infantry Junior Leaders Battalion Shornecliffe he attended the Army Pilots Course. His first tour with the AAC was as a Recce Flight Commander and included an operational tour in Northern Ireland.

He transferred to the AAC in January 1986 and served as a squadron second-in-command and then regimental adjutant before attending the Army Staff course. After a staff job in Operations and Policy at the Theatre HQ in Germany he commanded an anti-tank aviation squadron in 24 Airmobile Bde.

His first Lt Col appointment was as a member of the Directing Staff at the Joint Service Command and Staff College following which he commanded 9 Regt AAC in the newly formed 16 Air Assault Bde.

Promoted to Colonel in November 2001 he took up the post of Chief of the Ground Liaison Element in the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps in Germany. In July 2004 he became Colonel Mission Support Group at the Land Warfare Centre in Warminster and assumed the appointment of Director Army Aviation in the rank of Brigadier in December 2004.
