About Us

774 ABC Melbourne is the city's local ABC Radio Station, providing quality news, sports, current affairs, comment and analysis on local, national and international affairs together with a mix of contemporary music.

774 3LO first went to air on 13 October 1924, with an outside broadcast of a performance of 'La Boheme' which featured Dame Nellie Melba, from His Majesty's Theatre in Melbourne.

Named after 2LO London, 3LO was initally owned by the Broadcasting Company of Australia which represented Farmer and Co., J. and N Tait, Buckley and Nunn Limited and the Herald and Weekly Times Limited. The first manager was Major W. T. Conder, a former Governor of Pentridge Prison.

In 1928, control of 3LO passed to the Sydney-based Australian Broadcasting Company. In 1932, the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) was established and was given control of the two stations in Melbourne.

The ABC is an independent, national public broadcaster created by an Act of Parliament and designed to enrich the lives of Australians by offering a choice of television, radio and multimedia programs that inform, educate and entertain.

Since 1928, we have been providing topical, informative and involving programs which seek to make a complex world more understandable.

In 1999, 3LO celebrated it's 75th birthday.

In the year 2000, 3LO entered the digital era, taking on a new name 774 ABC Melbourne. One thing that remains unchanged is our determination to provide the best quality local radio for you, our listeners.

774 ABC Melbourne is renowned for its innovation in broadcasting, with outside broadcasts having come from a moving tram, an operating theatre during heart surgery, a suburban living room and underwater in Port Philip Bay.

Committed to standards of fairness, accuracy and impartiality, 774 ABC Melbourne and the ABC plays a leading cultural role in developing innovative new programs and services of relevance to the Australian community.

Today, you can wake up to Breakfast with Red Symons. Along with delivering a mix of news, current affairs, music, interviews, including regular traffic and weather up-dates, Red gives listeners all the information they need to get on with the day in an insightful yet entertaining format.

AM takes you around the country and around the world with great current affairs coverage.

Mornings with Jon Faine brings the focus back to Melbourne with regular talkback and interviews on topics from politics and law through to arts and sport. At 11am Jon slows the pace for the Conversation Hour, which has been likened to a 'casual chat amongst friends'.

As the Afternoon rolls around, it is time to relax with As the Richard Stubbs, before the Drive home with Lindy Burns for analysis on breaking news. Taking over from where previous programs left off, the program takes a different approach where talkback callers set the agenda for the program early on by airing their views and opinions on the issues of the day.

PM updates the day's events and then Derek Guille takes the time to discuss issues with many of his regular commentators, providing topical radio that is essential listening for any evening radio fan.

No stranger to Victorian airwaves, Derek brings to the Evening program his own relaxed style that will engage listeners by interpreting the day's issues in an amusing yet informative way.

On Saturday, Tonya Roberts makes available to you our experts. Get help with your garden, personal finance, some handyman advice for do it yourself home maintenance, and respected animal welfare advice.

And Sunday morning is for the arts with the 'The Sunday Show' from 10am to 12noon, reporting what is happening in the very broad spectrum of Melbourne's arts world.

Whether it is sport, current affairs, music, or the latest news, 774 ABC Melbourne has it covered.
