[edit] Proposing new stub types - procedure

Proposing new stub types
If you wish to propose a new stub category and template, please follow the following procedure:
  1. Check at Category:Stub categories to make sure that your proposed new stub does not already exist.
  2. List it at the top of the current month's section, under a header, like the ones shown (if any). Sign it with a datestamp (~~~~).
    • Please mind that a stub-category isn't about importance or notability of the topic
  3. Find a good number[1] of stub articles, as many as you can, that will fit that tag. Each of these articles can be:
    • currently be marked with stub;
    • currently marked with another type of stub tag (in which case you should justify why your tag is better for the article than the current one);
    • a stub whose categorisation is highly ambiguous or questionable;
    • not marked as a stub.
  4. Others will do the same, if they feel like it.
  5. 5 days after listing it here, if there is general approval or no objection, go ahead and create the new category and template following the format on Wikipedia:Stub. If consensus is not clear, or discussion is still ongoing, the proposal will remain open until consensus can be reached. List the new stub type on the stub types list in an appropriate section.

^ . Good number means about 60 articles or more, or 30 or more if associated with a WikiProject, though this figure may vary from case to case.

DO NOT place a proposal here for any stub type which is already being discussed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Discoveries or Wikipedia:Stub types for deletion. The proposal page is only for stub types that have not yet been created, and it is better to keep any discussion of such stub types in one place rather than splitting it between different pages.

[edit] "Speedy creation"

A stub type may be proposed for "speedy creation" if it meets one of the following criteria:

  • S1 - the creation of a category for which an approved upmerged template already exists and is now in use on more than 60 articles.
  • S2 - the creation of an upmerged national-level template for a subject in which other such national-level templates currently exist (e.g., X-bio-stub, X-hist-stub, or X-geo-stub, where X is the name of an internationally widely recognised country) or other instances where a clearly established pattern of similar subtypes exists. The proposed topic may not be controversial in scope.

List speedy creation proposals in the same proposal listings as normal stub proposals below.

[edit] Proposals, December 2007

If you create a stub type, please move its discussion to the December archive, add it to the list of stub types, and add it to the archive summary.

[edit] NEW PROPOSALS

[edit] Cat:Ulmaceae stubs

Another speedy plant stub for Elms (genus Ulmus), which account for nearly 200 of the more than 700 items in Cat:Tree stubs. Since the plant family Ulmaceae consists almost entirely of trees, this will be a dual subcat. --EncycloPetey 21:44, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Under Cat:Rosales stubs and Cat:Tree stubs:

[edit] Cat:Angolan sportspeople stubs

Speedy create to around 60--Thomas.macmillan 20:54, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

  • Technically, there are only 57, so it's not speediable. --EncycloPetey 22:22, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
    • Now upto 60 Support. Waacstats 23:50, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cat:Video gameplay stubs

  • Woops. I already created the stub and associated category for Template:Video-game-gameplay-stub before reading this page. This stub template is intended for all stub articles in Category:Video game gameplay. Note: the associated category is undergoing speedy renaming, as I created the article with the wrong name. Discuss. SharkD 20:42, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cat:Crassulaceae stubs

  • Speedy create this category, since {{Crassulaceae-stub}} already exists, and now marks 60 articles. --EncycloPetey 03:35, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Proposals, November 2007

If you create a stub type, please move its discussion to the November archive, add it to the list of stub types, and add it to the archive summary.

[edit] new foo people stubs

Adding up the number of articles linked to upmerged bio, footy-bio and politician templates means

so I propose both. Waacstats (talk) 16:53, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

  • First the "Astronemers", now this - People from San Marino are Sammarinese :) Other than that, support. Grutness...wha? 21:43, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
    • And more coffee for Waac, please. Support as corrected. Her Pegship (tis herself) 14:48, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
      • Believe it or not I used to be able to spell before I started editing here.Waacstats 19:08, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cat:American astronomers

71 of these in the American people stubs heirachy including 31 in the oversized Cat:American people stubs. Waacstats (talk) 16:53, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Still more new plant stubs

These are all speedy creations that follow the established pattern of segregating new plant stubs. All have more than 60 stubs waiting to be shifted from the parent category as stated. --EncycloPetey (talk) 01:28, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Potter Puppet Pals stub

I believe that there should be a Potter Puppet Pals stub. 70 to 200 articals could be put here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Markreidyhp (talkcontribs)

  • That would seem to be very unlikely. Not only is there no Cat:Potter Puppet Pals, there isn't even an article about them - all there is is a redirect to a small section of the article about their creator. So it's quite possible there are no stubs whatsoever about this subject. It seems very unlikely there would ever be anywhere near 60, let alone 70 to 200. Grutness...wha? 09:25, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cat:Utah radio station stubs

[edit] Cat:Oklahoma radio station stubs

There are currently 55 pages that link to {{Oklahoma-radio-station-stub}}, which I feel is sufficient to warrant these particular stubs getting their own category, a sub-category of Category:Southern United States radio station stubs. (These stubs and related articles are maintained by WP:WPRS.) - JPG-GR (talk) 00:40, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

  • Not quite, but close - the standard threshold for splitting is 60 (unless there was a specific Oklahoma radio WikiProject). If you can find another five, then I've no objection. Grutness...wha? 00:41, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cat:Maine radio station stubs

There are currently 53 pages that link to {{Maine-radio-station-stub}}, which I feel is sufficient to warrant these particular stubs getting their own category, a sub-category of Category:Northeastern United States radio station stubs. (These stubs and related articles are maintained by WP:WPRS.) - JPG-GR (talk) 00:38, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

  • Not quite, but close - the standard threshold for splitting is 60 (unless there was a specific Maine radio WikiProject). If you can find another seven, then I've no objection. Grutness...wha? 00:41, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
Ah - I was under the impression that if the stubs are watched by a WikiProject, 30 was enough - wasn't aware there had to be a specific WikiProject. In that case, the other 2 I've added are equally unwarranted at this time (per your comment). JPG-GR (talk) 00:43, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
The Utah one's probably close enough - the others, it's just a matter of time :) Grutness...wha? 00:45, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
I'm just in the process of doing maintenance - the larger 4 regional stub categories just seem cluttered. If they pass, great. If not, like you said - just a matter of time. JPG-GR (talk) 00:46, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cat:Anatomy stubs

Oversized, we seem to be splitting by body parts and the following are over 60.

based on permcat names. Waacstats (talk) 23:02, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

    • We've never split by body parts before except for {{eye-stub}}. Most anatomy stub subdivisions have been by organ system (e.g. {{musculoskeletal-stub}}, {{digestive-stub}}, {{circulatory-stub}}, etc.). I'm also not seeing a significant number of "abdomen" stubs, but I do see a lot of {{urogenital-stub}} candidates; stubs dealing with the urinary and reproductive systems. I think that would be a better option than abdomen, particularly since most of the anatomy stubs are by system. There are also quite a fair number of stubs in the category that should be stubbed for one of the subcategories (e.g. stubs on bones and nerves). That would reduce the size of Cat:Anatomy stubs quite a bit as well. --EncycloPetey (talk) 05:07, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
    • well spotted, I don't know what made me think that the split was bodyparts. The problem I would have with the urogenital stub cat is that we don't have a matching permcat, we have one for Urinary system and one for Reproductive system. I think the best thing to do is to withdraw my nomination, tidy up the category and have a lok at what is left. Waacstats (talk) 10:10, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
Comment: Do we have a way to link a stub category to two separate permcats? Or could we create a Urogential Ueber-permcat to contain the existing ones? It certainly looks like there are plenty of stubs to fill such a category. --EncycloPetey (talk) 22:48, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
      • We can have a stub cat linked to any number of permcats it is just that it is not usual way (of course there are a number of exceptions). I think that because urogenital isn't linked to one permcat it might clearer if nominated seperatly rather than suggested four days into a different nomination. note dispite what I have said I would support the nomination.Waacstats (talk) 09:28, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
But if it follows established patterns, then it can be speedied, so it would be a simple nomination. When this discussion is closed, the closer might even choose that as the outcome of the discussion, so we might just be patient. --EncycloPetey (talk) 17:17, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
  • Would Cat:Human reproduction stubs help winnow down this category? Her Pegship (tis herself) 00:58, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
Well, yes and no. It would cover the "genital" part of "urogenital", so in that respect it could serve the function of such a stub without having to create a new one. However, that stub category is about physiological processes, not anatomy. The question is whether we want to swamp out all the physiological process article stubs with the strict anatomy. I could see a valid argument either way. --EncycloPetey 03:44, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
I've thought a bit more and have to say "no" that wouldn't work. The Cat:Human reproduction stubs includes reproductive methods, birth control, and a lot of other varied topics. It isn't an anatomy category and shouldn't be used for the reproductive anatomy stubs. I think {{urogenital-stub}} / Cat:Urogenital stubs would be a better solution. --EncycloPetey 03:00, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cat:Indigenous peoples of North America stubs

Not to sure about the names though.Waacstats (talk) 22:28, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Italian Cuisine Stub

[edit] Cat:Japanese history stubs

At 800 at the moment. There looks to be a lot of bios in there, split those? Split by century, or otherwise by era? Any other bids? Alai (talk) 06:39, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

  • I thought the general rule was that bios were never marked with history-stub... why aren't they marked with whatever subtype of Japan-bio-stub is appropriate? Grutness...wha? 06:54, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Repointing of Africa-geo-stub

I'd like to propose re-pointing of {{Africa-geo-stub}} to direct it to the main Cat:Geography stubs. At the moment, it is unused - and should remain so, given that every country in Africa has its own geo-stubs and stub articles about areas spread over several countries use the regional types like {{AfricaW-geo-stub}}. This would parallel what has already been done with both {{CentralAm-geo-stub}} and {{SouthAm-geo-stub}} and would mean one less category to be checked for stray stubs ever day! Grutness...wha? 22:50, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

  • I'm of the general view that such moves are potentially puzzling to the passing user, though I see the benefit of it from the "consumer" point of view. What about having each such populate both? Then they'd show up both where the person applying expects it to, as well as where the geo-re-sorting team will find it. Alai 23:31, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
    • Mmmm, that's a possibility. We get round that with the SouthAm and CentralAm ones (and also China-geo-stub) with a little note on the template saying "this stub type is deprecated, please use an individual country stub" or similar. But pointing it to both categories would work just as well and may be useful if we even decide to get rid of the African regional categories (which is a possibility, since almost everything in them is now subcatted by country). Grutness...wha? 00:37, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
