The first Prime Minister of Thailand was Phraya Manopakorn Nititada, who took office after the 1932 Siamese coup d'état ended the absolute monarchy. The current Prime Minister is Somchai Wongsawat, who took office as acting Prime Minister on 9 September 2008 after his predecessor was removed from office by the Constitutional Court of Thailand. He previously served as Senior Deputy Prime Minister prior to taking office. [1] Somchai Wongsawat was elected by the National Assembly of Thailand as Prime Minister of Thailand on 17 September 2008,[2], winning 298 votes against 163 votes[3] for Abhisit Vejjajiva. Somchai won more than 60% parliament vote, and he assumed office upon endorsement by King Bhumibol Adulyadej.[4][5]
