Entrepreneur Of The Year 2004 Finalists: Since his childhood, massage has been part of Hariono’s life. But when he moved to Jakarta, he had difficulty finding a clean massage parlor with a good reputation. This inspired him to establish a clean, professionally run massage parlor that offered only massage services. With his own savings, Hariono established the first massage parlor under the Bersih Sehat brand in 1983.

To differentiate Bersih Sehat from other similar establishments, Hariono has targetted the middle- and upper-class customers by advertising in Japanese and English media. The strategy paid off; many of his customers are expatriates and 35% of his total customers are female. By providing a professional, clean, and safe service, Hariono has been able to create a niche market with Bersih Sehat.

After years of hard work and the success of the seven facilities in Jakarta, Bersih Sehat received the ISO 9002:1994 certificate for its service quality, the only massage establishment to have received the certification. Recently, Hariono opened a Bersih Sehat branch in Singapore. Since there is no existing model for a traditional massage establishment in the country, this new business opportunity looks poised for success.
