Guidance on submitting research proposals

The CRE is always interested in research that informs our understandings of race, ethnicity, discrimination, inequalities, integration, citizenship, and justice.

We are particularly eager to learn from policy-relevant, practical, and evidence-based work.

Submissions for research proposals should be forward-thinking and reflect current and future strategic priorities for the CRE.

You should bear in mind, however, that the CRE's budget for research is limited and generally reserved for work that is identified and prioritised in-house.

Where external researchers are needed, the CRE usually invites tenders to bid for the work.

Therefore, it is rare for the CRE to support unsolicited research proposals. Nevertheless, if you are interested, then please follow the guidelines below, outlined in the research proposal specifications guide.

Once we have received your proposal, it will be reviewed by the CRE's research team and the strategy and communications directorate. If it meets our strategic priorities and needs for the current financial year, it will then be reviewed at the communications and strategy committee meeting, which meets every four to six months and is responsible for all of the CRE's research planning. Final decisions will be communicated in writing as soon as possible.

Please do remember that the CRE is not a funding body.

There are many other organisations that may be better placed to support your research work.
