DIA Historical Reference

DIA's current Chronologies include:

  • A Chronology of Defense Intelligence in the Gulf War: A Research Aid for Analysts: Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM provided a significant challenge to the Defense Intelligence Agency and to the Defense Intelligence Community. This extensive chronology, the first of several unclassified publications, is a guide to day-to-day support provided to the warfighter. It is for soldiers and strategists, policymakers and scholars, but most importantly, the practitioners of intelligence -- our Nation's first line of defense.
  • At the Creation: 1961-1965 Origination Documents of the Defense Intelligence Agency (PDF Format, Full version is 24 mb)
  • Brief History: The Defense Intelligence Agency was created in 1961 as the Nation's preeminent military intelligence organization. The Agency did not have long to wait for a major crisis to test its mettle. Here John Hughes, Special Assistant to the Director of DIA, briefs the country on television in February 1963 on the Cuban Missile Crisis. Today, DIA continues to build on its proud traditions and remains "Committed to Excellence in Defense of the Nation."
