2009 Deer Check Stations

A number of deer check stations have been eliminated this fall due to budget reductions. In spite of these changes, it still is imperative for the DNR to collect data that helps manage Michigan's deer herd. We encourage hunters to bring their deer in to one of the 2009 deer check stations, open Nov. 15-25 and Nov. 30 during the regular firearm deer season, or to one of nine Operations Service Centers (OSC) during all other deer seasons. Click here for a map of 2009 Deer Check stations.

In the nine-township chronic wasting disease (CWD) surveillance zone in Kent County, where deer check is mandatory, there will be several locations open for deer check throughout the 2009 deer hunting seasons. See the Kent County check stations map for more details.

Biologists use the information gathered at DNR deer check stations to monitor the overall health of the deer herd and to make recommendations for future deer seasons.

Checking deer is completely voluntary except in the CWD surveillance zone. As a gesture of appreciation, the DNR gives a Deer Management Cooperator patch to hunters willing to help in this endeavor.

The last day for deer check at the Operation Service Centers will be January 8, 2010.

The deer check station located at the East Tawas State Harbor Dock in East Tawas would be open on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 28-29, to continue to collect deer heads for testing for bovine tuberculosis. Updated 11/25/2009
