THE BUZZ: Strike through all those notions of awards-season glamor for this reunion of Marty and Leo, since reports of marketing-budget shortfalls and promotional challenges (aka DiCaprio's availability) shuttled the movie into the middle of winter. Don't think it'll hurt the thriller's box-office, though, since it's been testing through the roof. Nikki Finke digs out the scoop.

THE BUZZ: Yes, Roman Polanski has never been more controversial since the events of last year, which is like oxygen, heat, and fuel for Summit's marketing campaign and eventual box-office take. All the scandal and debate seems out of context with the campy mystery/thriller Polanski offers up this winter. Check the official trailer, in which Kim Cattrall chews scenery in that extra special television actresses way.

Happy Tears

Happy Tears [limited]

Director: Mitchell Lichtenstein
Stars: Parker Posey, Demi Moore, Rip Torn (Full Cast)
Studio: Roadside Attractions

The Plot: Sisters Jayne (Posey) and Laura (Moore) return home to Pittsburgh to tend to their father (Torn), who is wrestling with dementia. The touchy family dynamics are amplified by the presence of their dad's new girlfriend and a search for buried gold in the backyard.

Photos (see all 66 | slideshow) Videos (see all 6)
Happy Tears (2009) -- Jayne and Laura are about to take on the first man they just might not be able to handle: their seventy-something-year-old father Joe. Dutiful daughters returning to the house they grew up in, Jayne and Laura are forced to take a closer look at their own not-so-perfect lives while dodging childhood memories. Laura suspects that Joe needs full-time care, but Jayne hopes that their father's condition isn't that serious. Joe is still singing and playing his old guitar, and the lively widower even has a new "ladyfriend," shameless and sassy Shelly. But as the visible moments of their father's impending senility increase, so do the dysfunctional family dynamics. Tensions flare as the close sisters must also juggle their own very different lives - Laura's busy schedule as an environmentalist and mother of two small children, and Jayne, desperate to finally have a baby with her workaholic art-dealing husband Jackson. Their adventures back home are not without magic, mischief and mayhem, and even a search for buried treasure in the backyard! Any tears that Jayne and Laura might shed will be happy ones.
Happy Tears (2009) -- MovieMaze.de - Trailer (Quicktime & Flash)

THE BUZZ: Mitchell Lichtenstein's new film is a million indie miles apart in sentiment from his debut, Teeth. It's '90s style filmmaking customized for Parker Posey's weirdo comedic prowess, and the kind of light, relatable story that could resonate with people catch most movies at-home these days (the sort of people who saw Party Girl and The Daytrippers in theaters). Demi Moore's Hollywood twilight never looked so good, ditto for Ellen Barkin and Rip Torn - even if Mr. Torn's recent indiscretions suggest he might need a minder or two in real life. Here's a recent interview with Lichtenstein.

The Good Guy

The Good Guy [LA/NY]

Director: Julio DePietro
Stars: Alexis Bledel, Scott Porter, Bryan Greenberg (Full Cast)
Studio: Roadside Attractions

The Plot: Manhattanite Beth (Bledel) finds her fledgling romance with Wall Streeter Tommy (Porter) complicated by the introduction of Daniel (Greenberg), Tommy's co-worker.

The Good Guy (2009) -- AllTrailers.net - Trailer (Flash)

THE BUZZ: Alexis Bledel in New York City, employed and juggling two dudes is a good-enough concept for me, especially if writer-director Julio DePietro's debut has earned comparisons to the respective glossiness of Metropolitan and "Gossip Girl", even if you have to flashback to the era when jobs were plenty and Wall Street wasn't synonymous with pure evil. Andrew McCarthy supports as the slick-haired bossman.

THE BUZZ: New Line Cinema, working for Warner Bros. here, looks to repeat their He's Just Not That Into You success by hauling that movie's formula across country. The project lost Katherine Heigl in transport but replaced her with every other top actress who was not in the aforementioned movie. Can we hope for a little edge and unexpected plot turns here? Maybe a "hard PG-13"? Of course not. But you can rest assured that a sequel, New Year's Eve is coming in late 2011!

THE BUZZ: Harry Potter is going out of business, and Hollywood still hasn't found his successor. The Lightning Thief is book one in Rick Riordan's series of five proper novels to date; can Philsopher's Stone director Chris Columbus put this franchise into motion? The young adult in all of us could use a new hero, and Columbus's career needs a renaissance as well.

THE BUZZ: An iconic monster is resuscitated, and the industry is wondering: How will this measured approach to horror filmmaking translate with modern audiences? It's been a guessing game for Universal, who took it off the spring 09 calendar at the end of 2008, then moved it to VDay 2010 toward the end of summer 2009 -- the holiday is typically kind to horror films, however and I feel like Benicio Del Toro will be the pop-culture talk of the season. Mostly I hope that the picture will rekindle the movie-going public's affection for Emily Blunt (ditto Agent Smith, who plays the role of Det. Aberline, which was not a part of the 1941 original).

THE BUZZ: James Cameron's response to upping the world of visual effects? He takes a new approach to 3D -- all the way down to creating his own cameras -- and augments the natural world by introducing new plant life and creatures to the aforementioned band of humans. It's the kind of anticipation that even makes President Roslin swoon. Meanwhile, Sam Worthington quietly has become new face of sci-fi. That makes us swoon.

THE BUZZ: This movie radiates tension in and out! Packaged by super-producer Graham King (The Departed) right before the Screen Actor's Guild strike in 2008, Edge had trouble finding a studio, which was attributed, of course, to Mel Gibson being blacklisted by Hollywood. Not so! Said King. And then Robert De Niro backed out of the co-starring role right as filming began. To me, this is all merely early publicity for a project that doesn't fully engage me otherwise. In truth, De Niro being replaced by Ray Winstone drew my attention back to the film, and I'm primed to see how another terrific actor, Danny Huston, fits into the plot, which promises to twist until the end thanks to William Monahan, Graham King's Oscar-winning screenwriter from The Departed.

THE BUZZ: A late entry into this year's awards sweepstakes courtesy of Fox Searchlight and first-time director Scott Cooper, Crazy Heart doesn't sound like the story offers anything new, however, the idea of watching Bridges sing, drink, puke, cry, and redeem is undeniably appealing. Assuming Bridges will earn a Best Actor nomination, you might want to revisit Tender Mercies, the Oscar winner to which Heart is intimately linked.

THE BUZZ: Spotted: Kristen Bell trying the Amy Adams approach to mainstream success, embracing a Disney-fied take on romance in NYC. What will Upper East Siders have to say about this, as well as Bell's rabid cult audience? Her fortune is shining in the Eternal City, though it's unlikely she'll ever head back to Neptune, CA for the once-promising "Veronica Mars" movie. In fact, I feel like this fantasy comedy mirrors Ms. Bell's career, since she's found luck on TV with as a guest star on "Heroes" and the titular narrator of "Gossip Girl", but she has yet to find a big-screen vehicle for her considerable success. Something tells me she might have pitched a coin or two when the cameras weren't rolling.
