Technical Specification

See the BBC Technical Standards here (particularly section 4.1 Video Requirements and section 4.2 Audio requirements).

Aspect Ratio

16x9 (Full Height Anamorphic) Digital Betacam ONLY (unless the title was originally shot in 4x3 (1.33:1 or 1.66:1) and/or presented theatrically in this ratio)

Note that the following formats are not acceptable:

  • Linear letterbox or aspect ratio conversions from a linear letterbox format to 16x9 FHA
  • Aspect ratio conversions from a lower aspect ratio to a higher one eg from 1.33:1 (4x3) to 1.78:1 (16x9)
  • 21x9 (cinema ratio 2.35:1) - Distributors often refer to this as a 16x9 master but this format (often the DVD master where the 21x9 image is squeezed into a 16x9 format with blanking top and bottom) is unacceptable.

Compliance

All material will be quality assessed for technical compliance. Any material that fails to reach the approved standard will be rejected. A replacement will expected within 14 days.

Should this replacement also not reach the required standard you will be contacted by Head of Legal and Business affairs (Prog Acqs) who will request that a replacement title is provided or that the cost of the rejected film be deducted from the agreed fee.

Duration Compliance

It is understood that it is not the distributor's responsibility to supply material to pre set durations.
