Thanks for answering my query. I appreciate it much. 

Our library doesn't have a copy of the romanized Vietnamese or French
translations, so I'm unable to check for myself. Do you happen to know
whether the story appeared in the original 14th century compilation or
whether it might have been added as part of subsequent 16th and 18th century
supplements to Li~nh Nam Chi'ch Qua'i that Keith Taylor discusses (Birth of
Vietnam, 1983: 356)?
