Thanks for the encouragement, Jackie. This is a story on which I spent a good month sweating over revisions, late last spring. The 'Gold Award' is simply the Writers of the Future grand prize for the year. Each quarter a first, second, and third prize winner is chosen. The grand prize is chosen from the four quarterly first prize winners. The WotF website sometimes refers to it as the 'Grand Prize' and sometimes as the 'Gold Award'. The prize itself is a golden quill pen in a lucite pylon. I would guess that's where the name comes from. The traditional order of athletic medals is gold/silver/bronze, of course. (The other prizes are also pens in pylons.)
