Documentary - Vote 'YES' For Aborigines - was on the SBS 27-05-2007

The documentary that looks at the shameful treatment of Aborigines, the monumental effort to bring the 1967 referendum to the Australian people and the legacy of that referendum. Interviews with such luminaries as Paul Keating, Malcolm Fraser and Faith Bandler are interspersed with archival footage, providing a compelling picture of injustice, heroism and lost opportunities.

I would love to see the Aboriginal languages and history taught in our schools,This is the only true Aussie Culture and Values ...I regard the rest as a lot of Baloney Hypocrisy and a smear campaign against individual communities. I also have news for those who are racists against black people simply because of the colour of their skin.... This is Black man's country!!!
23 May 2007 - Dillon Naragingy
I am very proud of my heritage and of who I am. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to discover my culture and heritage. I now accept who I am and feel accepted. I am proud to be Aborigine.

Good evening, i would like to say how proud i am that there is a show like this on television, its a great thing to watch and be able to debate such issues. I wish such a show was available to the youth of Australia, and encouraged.

kind regards,

As a wadjala, I'd like to thank you for your balanced reporting. I watch your show regularly. I am deeply sorry for the loss of the couple you showed last night and hope that an inquiry can bring them peace. I'm also glad that you presented a balanced view of the person who died (I won't write his name - I think that's the correct thing to do - but please forgive me if I'm wrong, I'm not meaning to be disrespectful). I only wish other news programmes (& some pollie's) would be as honest.
Drugs are bad for both white and aboriginal communities (just look at what's happening in the AFL) and I hope that together both black and wadjala people can fight them and come closer together because of it.
Stay strong.

Good afternoon,
I am in the process of organising invitations for the 2007 National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony and Ball to be held in Darwin on 13th July. The National NAIDOC Committee would like to extend an invitation to Karla Grant. Does Karla have an email address we could use to send the invitation?
If you wouldn't mind emailing her contact email address to heidi.andrews@facsia.gov.au, that would be fantastic.
Thankyou so much for your help,
Kind regards,
Heidi Andrews

how are ya karla? good i guess with your job anyone would be! i enjoy living black more than any other news program because its deadly and i can relate to it which is beneficial! I live on an Aboriginal mission called Walhallow! i go to quirindi high school and am in year 11! My future goal is to study law but specialise in childrens court! But if i was to not succeed in that field seen as you are one of the biggest Aboriginal role models i would then try to become like you or try and make a career in journalism or try to do what you do! Thank you for reading this and hope to meet you in the future!!!

How sad I am today that the government continue to deny protection of the rock art in the Burrup Peninsula. I really urge all that care to add their voice. Search 'burrup' in google to find others that are doing their bit or join the GetUp campaign. This is a national disgrace and we need to do what we can before it's too late.

I see the show and I think it is terrific, but I would like the programe to be more centred on Indigenous health and lack of Indigenous employment.CDEP is a valuable tool to get into full time employment but is not always understood even by those people using the plan.
Baryugil the asbestos mess should be closed and the people relocated into clean, healthy, housing ereas not built on Asbestos foundations.
Use the opportunity to speak out while you can.

Miss Grant,Enjoy your shows alot just want to know is their anyway you can help push the Aboriginal Hip-Hop scene, Our kids seem to be falling deep down into this Nigger Negative crap thinking their the next Gangster up out of our communitties. We seen and have had one of the Deadly award winning artist by the name of Lez"Bex"Beckett tour arround and passed our communitties,But he is allways really busy, He has done wonders for all our communitties, But like all great Aboriginal icons we don't get to see enough of Lez"Bex"Beckett words of wisdom,
is their anyway you can do a success story on Lez"Bex"Beckett to help our children focus a bit more, That would be Fantacy...

Great show, as an non-Indigenous person studying Aboriginal Studies at Uni, your show has given me great insight into Indigenous Affairs. My heart goes out to Indigenous People for the treatment you have recieved from non-Indigenous people in the past and still in the present. Once again a great show, keep up the good work.

Dear Karla
I am a Wiradjurri women from Wellington NSW. I am currently in the process of co-ordinating a 7 month Youth program, as like most of our indigenous youth we have many issue's to cover.
During the month of Feb 2007 we would like the opportunity to hold a talent quest.
We are now in the process of asking for help from our black brother's and sista's who our youth look up to as strong role modles.
Karla to our next generation you are seen as a very powerful Aboriginal Women and it would be an amazing experience for the youth to meet and be around you.
i am very sorry this letter is not on a professional level.
Karla the Wellington Information and Neighbourhood Services Inc would like to invite you to be a judge on our panel for the talent quest.
We have not as yet made a formal date as we understand that you are a very busy women. We would like the talent quest to be held in Feb 2007

HI EVERYONE AT LIVING BLACK, FIRSTLY ID LIKE TO START BY SAYING WHAT A FANTASTIC PROGRAM, I AM COMPLETELY HOOKED, WHAT A GREAT USE OF TELEVISION AND MEDIA, U HAVE ENABLED OUR COMMUNITY TO HAVE A VOICE AND ENCOURAGED OTHERS TO STAND UP FOR WHAT THEY BELIEVE IN AND KNOW THAT WE R NEVER ALONE, TIMES ARE CHANGING FOR THE BETTER BECAUSE PROGRAMS LIKE LIVING BLACK ARE PRESENTING A POSITIVE ATTITUDE TO OUR PEOPLE AND ARE ENCOURAGING OUR COMMUNITIES TO LOOK TOWARDS A BRIGHTER FUTURE WHILST NEVER FORGETTING OUR HISTORY OR THE PAST, ITS IMPORTANT THAT WE CONTINUE TO LOVE AND ENCOURAGE OUR YOUNG PEOPLE BECAUSE THEY ARE OUR FUTURE, BY SHOWING POSITIVE PROGRAMS ABOUT THE WONDERFUL THINGS OUR YOUNG PEOPLE ARE DOING IN THEIR COMMUNITIES ENCOURAGES OTHER YOUNG PEOPLE TO FIGHT THE STEREOTYPE AND LET THEM KNOW THAT THEY CAN REACH FOR THE STARS AND NEVER LOOK BACK, THIS WORLD BELONGS TO ALL OF US AND WE HAVE JUST AS MUCH RIGHTS TO MAKE OUR OWN OPPORTUNITIES AS ANYONE ELSE, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE HURDLES AND HARDSHIP ALONG THE WAY BUT ITS ALL APART OF THE JOURNEY, NEVER LOSE SIGHT OF YOUR DREAMS... BE A STRONG SPIRIT AND NOONE WILL BE ABLE TO MAKE US FALL NO MATTER HOW HARD THEY TRY..XO XO

Hiya there Karla and team, how are you? Good I hope...I really love watching "living black" every week.As a whitey, I am ashamed and disgusted at the "third world" treatment of our MOST PRECIOUS indigeonous societies throughout Oz in todays day and age.I wish I was black! My ancestry has black blood, descended from the first Aboriginal policeman in N.S.W., going back some 8 generations now and I must say that all my life I have somehow felt the pain of black Australia as a great sorrow inside of me.I've always thought my black blood was the reason for my affinity with Abo's (Australian Born Originals)and I must say that I am proud of my black blood. Not so with my white blood!
Living Black is a most wonderful inspiration to me and I pray that white Australia tune in to your most informative current affairs program and nurture an affinity with the "original Australian" as I,and alot of other "whiteys'" do...
God bless you Karla and the team at Living Black. And May God bless ALL my indigeonous brothers and sisters every where. My deepest affections go out to you all from the bottom of my heart/soul.
ONE BLOOD ARE WE ALL!!!

Hi Karla,
great show this week watched the great feature on Tirkandi Inaburra and believe that this type of establishment should be built everywhere,I have first hand knowledge that the system works as my son Jack was a volunteer student and has just graduated from it with more confidence and real goals and values of his culture. something of which he did not believe in thought it was all rubbish. he has not been in trouble with the law since his entry into the program and has taken away some great friendships and real beliefs in himself and has a goal to finish school until he can get an apprenticeship.
great show,i have grown to love it.

there is not enough time given on either SBS or the ABC (forget the so-called mainstream channels) addressing the concerns and lifestyles of Australia's Landlords. As a simple white tenant I would like more news (other than from biased pollies) entertainment, culture and the arts .... so many issues are never touched (like if most of Australia is Crown Land, who actually is the Crown? and why do bureaucrats act on the "Crown's" behalf - if it really means "Sovereign People" there should be more actions like what's happened to greater Perth... perhaps ONE land title case, with small designated areas left for the newcomers to lease?)
Anyway, many thanks for good (short) programs.
09 Oct 2006 - Greg Pappas
Karla,
Enjoy your program alot and agree with the issue that face our younger veiwers, Is their any way we will get to see Indigenours Hip-Hoppers Like Lez"Bex"Beckett, Last Connection & Brother Black because they seem to be making a bigger impact on the community and Mainstream then most people give them credit for Esspecail World wide touring Artist Lez"Bex"Beckett

I agree with Kim Palmer who asks for a show on Palm Island. I am a new European immigrant and live in Townsville. Palm Island has puzzled and fascinated me as you can see it from the main land but it seems to be a no go zone for somebody like me. It has been in the news a lot for the last years and discussions with the average white person never gave me any clear answers about the situation on Palm Island. I started reading about Aussie history, and I am deeply moved about the aboriginal part. There is so much that most white people I come across just don't know. Thanks for your programs and for giving information about the world we live in.
24 Sep 2006 - Anne
Thanks for keeping us informed every week, Karla and the team. It's great to get the Koori perspective on important events and your video journalist approach really does give a genuine insight into what's happening in communities. Just one suggestion , Karla - you are always beautifully polite to all the guests you interview, but as a white Australian, I'd be really happy to see you get a bit tough with the politicians who try not to answer the questions.

Just absolutely wonderful to see, a current affairs that bring national insightment into those lives that are usually unaware of the importance of these issues that affect our indigenous communities. I am of New Zealand Descent, however I was born Australian, and have travelled throughout the majority of Australia, rural and urban, in the hopes to educate myself a little more on these issues that affect all of us. Thank you 'Living Black' for enhancing my personal awareness of our indigenous communities. I have learnt so much and appreciate it dearly. I feel education, positivity, awareness and these important issues being addressed, WILL, CAN AND DOES improve a united community that is Australian. Jenna Brown - Darwin, NT

I'm from Palm Island in North Queensland I always watch Living Black nearly every week and i think its good that we got a show like this so we know whats going on all around Australia. Well were im from its on the outskirts off mainland Townsville I would like to say is that with the new laws we are living under is discriminating with the new liquor licence when we go into Townsville on the Plane or the Ferry they have the Police waiting for everybody to get off at the Airport and the Jetty they just treat us like outcast in our own homeland never a week goes by they the Police are searching somebodys bag if not they are searching same people who they suspect they got 2 police cars at the Jetty when the Ferry comes in even if your not carrying anything its still itimadating just with them watching us.Why don't you do a story on Palm Island and let the whole world know whats happening over here its just like how they treated our ancestors in the old rashin days.
07 Sep 2006 - Jonothan (Walpiri man)
I love the show , well done to everyone involved, watching the show makes me proud to be an aboriginal man, also the stories inspire me to do my part in the preservation of the oldest culture on earth, the aboriginal culture. I would like to share a little of my journey in life. My stepfather brought my younger brother, sister and I to Brisbane/Ipswich from Alice Springs in 1987, because my mother could not look after us properly due to alcoholism, I was raised in Brisbane/Ipswich with my younger brother and sister, we didn't have the best childhoods but our father gave us the simple needs, food and shelter and all the love he knew how. I have personally overcome the horrors of alcoholism, drug addiction and the core issues that caused me to do that stuff. I have come to know the real me, however I feel I will not know the full story until I go home to Alice Springs and learn about my culture, the aboriginal culture. I enjoy helping my people, but i cannot help anyone until I first help myself. I dream of a better life for our people, and all I can do is my part, and hopefully inspire others to do the same. We need to hold our heads high, for we have come a long way, thanks to the Elders who fought hard for our freedom, however there is a long way to go. I would also like to share something I learnt from a friend, he told me that the land has rights, such as the right to be looked after, wow , and I thought land rights was about possession, little did I know. The land belongs to us and we belong to the land. My mother is the most beautiful woman I know, a full-blooded central desert aboriginal woman, my mum gave me life and my aboriginality. Thanks to Carla and the living black team 4 all the inspiration, keep up the great work.
06 Sep 2006 - Hannah May
Thank you for producing such a positive and interesting show (and website). It's one of the few news shows that I enjoy watching because it presents the positive things that are going on in Aboriginal communities - as opposed to the usual derogatory media hype. It's taught me so much - thank you.

Living Black is one of the best programs on Indigenous issues today. Reading through the guestbook is a great testament to the invaluabe education and insight given through the show. Thank you to ALL the people behind the scences who help keep this program running - I only wish we could have a dedicated Indigenous channel
Just one question:
Is there some kind of email alert to let us know about upcoming shows, that would be great!

Well first I would like to say is that what a awesome site to look at and having the understanding towards knowing the Aboriginal people of young and old. As a New Zealand Maori who are just the same as the Aboriginal people. We as Maori have a clear understanding towards and know what you's are going through and I feel so sorry that such a beautiful culture is being treated like that, may you be young or old. Maybe it's time that we as people voted for more Aboriginals to be in Parliment and then the Nation will be equal. Just like us the Maori people we have our people in Parliment so that we have the equal right just like everyone else. And they are our voices we need to speak and fight for what we believe as people.
Once's again I thank you's so much for writing the story on the Passing of our Maori Queen and the story on our New King. I am so proud that I have read this site. If by any change to become a member can I have information send to this address 1/63 Duke St,Annerley QLD 4103.
And we say in New Zealand He Tangata He Tangata He Tangata it means (It is people It is people It is people) Kia Kaha (be strong)

Thank you from

Maori name is: Haami Tainganui Hinepukohurangi Tangiwai

English name is as above Sam Tangiwai

I don't know whether you can help me, but i'll ask.
I am a student at swinburne uni in melb and we are doing a community development project on indigenous affairs. a group member remembers a progam with some very good comments from a West Aust politician from this year. Rather than trolling through the archives, if anybody can help it would be greatly appreciated. gscudds@gmail.com
many thanks for your program and its coverage of issues.

Hi Guys Luv the show, just discovered this site. I have a comment to make Re:John 23rd May.
You asked Isn't this land also yours. The Lands can never truly belong to the Whites because the connections from the Dreamings just isn't there. The Aboriginal People are part of the land, the land is their "Mother", they are Traditional Owners. They didn't own the Land with Deeds, they owned it with their souls. They believe that it is their responsibility to look after the land and the land will look after them. The Whites (as you have called yourself)took the land by force. Yes you can own a piece of Land that you can buy from the Government, but you can never truly own the "Mother Country". It is not embedded in your soul.
There are discoveries in the NT to suggest that Aboriginals were here at least 60,000years even past 116,000years ago even upto 176,000 ( by Archeologist -Researcher name Fullager)and we believe that we were hear for the creation of the lands, that we are part of the creation of the lands. Sorry but you can never have that connection or feeling that goes with it. That is our History that the Government doesn't want to acknowledge. I could go on, perhaps next time.

gday, love the show...Australia is such a diverse country and you guys do a great job of representing the culture and issues of the traditional people of the land. It really makes me proud to continue to learn about our rich black history, and disapointed that most of my white people hold such little understanding and respect for indigenous Australia. I hope young people like me can change the attitudes of white australia and celebrate and recognise black culture- past and present. Bloody good show, good host too.

Hi there,
I love the show, i normally watch it if i am home on time.
It is a breath of fresh air from the rest of the mainstream, who's agenda is "All that is black is not worth reporting".
Freedom, Self determination, and equality for all.
Keep up the good work guys.

Many thanks,
Kevin Kamau-Gacheru.

Hi there. Would it be possible to interview Phillip Ruddock to elaborate on this statement regarding customary law "we are not a nation of tribes....Our expectation is that when people come and settle in Australia they are under an obligation to accept the law and the principles that go with it".(C Merritt, 'Ethnics roped into tribal law ban', The Australian, May 26, 2006)
As he said, "when people come and settle in Australia they are under an obligation to accept the law and the principles that go with it". Does anyone else find this hypocritical? 200+ years ago, when this country was invaded by the Brits, they didn't exaclty "accept the law and the principles that go with it", did they?

hi carla, just a short note to say that we do enjoy your show it is very informative and hits the target about most issues to do with us mob, keep up the good work, and we hope to see some extramedia pictures maybe do something extreme, something different like interview Mr.john howard and talk to him about his thoughts about us mob,i mean look at it futuristically wouldn't it be better to say sorry now while he is the Prime Minister, its really setting a foundation for himself really he will feel better in the long run ay! lets face it he won't be always be the prime minister, when he actually retires he'll be at peace when he walks down the street knowing that at least he made his peace with the indigenous mob of this land, its really for his own personal benefit i suppose.
