Metadata/Cataloguing Tools

This page brings together a summary of known metadata tools used for creating metadata for various types of resources. It includes tools for entering and editing metadata, and utilities for processing, extracting, validating, and viewing metadata. Some of these tools allow for metadata to be served up in different formats, such as XML, RDF, XHTML, ISO2709 etc. Some tools are based on established metadata standards while others produce metadata based specifically on local application profiles.

Available tools are:

Metamaker
Owner/ Creator:
Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
Description:
The “Metamaker” is a tool designed to create Dublin Core and AgMES compliant metadata. The tool allows the user to create metadata from scratch using a simple web form and save it in different formats (HTML, XHTML, XML, RDF or AGRIS AP). It also offers to extract metadata from existing web pages or local html files. The user can then edit this metadata in the web form and, if it is intended for a website, cut and paste the generated HTML or XHTML metadata in the <head> section of the HTM(L) file. Help for each element can be accessed by clicking the element name. Frequently used controlled vocabularies (AGROVOC and AGRIS categories) are incorporated into the tool to allow for standardized description of the subject.
