THE HUDSON BROTHERS SHOWS Razzle Dazzle! The Hudson Brothers had been together since 1964 as a musical trio before being discovered by Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour producer Allan Blye who was looking for someone to host the Bono's summer replacement show in 1974.
Featured on the summer show were Gary Owens, Ronnie Graham, Stephanie Edwards and Australian 'Rod Hull and his Amazing Emu', actually a hand puppet that would attack poor Rod and throw him to the floor at the slightest provocation. (Hull was killed in 1999 when he fell from his roof trying to fix a TV antennae.) The highlight of the program was a visit with Chuckie Margolis, an incorrigible brat who lived in his parent's basement played by Mark Hudson. The show led to a minor hit single 'So You Are A Star' that was pleasingly Beatles-esque. The Hudson Brothers Show was very successful leading to the Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show, a CBS Saturday morning half-hour variety program that debuted in the fall of 1974 and lasted one season with reruns on Sunday mornings in 1976.
On the Saturday morning show every episode featured the same running skits (it often seemed like the same exact script from week to week) - a monsters sketch, a desert island sketch, the 'Razzle-Dazzle Wrap-up', the bear (a holdover from 'The Andy Williams Show', 1969-1971), Knights of the Round Table sketch ("Do it for me- Lady Patricia!"), and a visit with Chuckie Margolis. Every episode ends with the boys talking to Fabulous Freddy, the world's youngest 'network executive in charge of kid's programming'. Most of the skit players from The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour were also regulars on the Saturday morning Hudson Brothers program including Ted Zeigler, Peter Cullen, Freeman King, and Billy Van. Also seen - Avril Chown and Ron Hull and his Emu puppet. The Hudson Brothers also starred in 'Bonkers', a 1978-79 syndicated comedy/variety half-hour. |
