Retranslated into English from Blumentritt's translation into Spanish from the English of Dr. Hirth (ca., 1891); the Spanish version being published in the Filipino paper Periodico Hebdomadario Escolar for November 9, 1901. This is an extract from the geographical work of the above author, who was a Chinese official stationed in the south of the Chinese empire about the middle of the thirteenth century. It is of special interest as being the earliest known record of the Philippines, and was written about one and one-half centuries before Magalhles's discovery. It shows that the.Chinese had a well-established trade among the islands at this early time, and it may almost safely be assumed that they had had such intercourse for centuries. VOL. A composite document compiled from notes to Pastells's edition of Colin's Labor evangélica, iii, pp. 674-697. Many of the separate papers in this document were transcribed for Pastells from the original MSS. in A. de I. (see VOL. XXI, P. 31, note 1; P. 49, note 14; P. 75, note 10; P. 78, note 21). This is important for the study of the royal patronage in ecclesiastical aff airs, and the matter of the episcopal visit of regulars which was discussed so violently and bitterly in the Philippines, even to the end of the Spanish regime.
