This is even yet one of the most important books ever written about Mindanao and adjacent islands. It contains descriptions of the islands, their products, peoples, and history. It was edited with a lengthy prologo, notes, and various tables, by W. E. Retana, with the collaboration of Pablo Pastells, S. J., under the following title: "Historia de Mindanao y Jo1o por el P. Francisco Combés de la Compañia de Jesus;" Madrid: [Imprenta de la viuda de M. Minuesa de los Rios], 1897; F0. While the actual wording of the text has been respected, accents and punctuation have been introduced. From this we have translated the following in our series: "The natives of the southern islands;" book i, chaps. ix-xviii (Retana and Pastells's ed.). VOL. XL, pp. 99-182 (in ethnological appendix). Copies of the original edition are found in the following libraries and collections: P. de T. (Manila); R. A. de la H. (Madrid); M. B. de U. (Madrid); C. G. de T. de F.; Pastells (Barcelona); University of Sevilla; Biblioteca provincial (Toledo); B. N. (Paris); Biblioteca de Ajuda (Portugal); B. N. (Lisbon); Harvard; J. C. B. (Providence); N. Y. Public; Astor; L. of C.; U. S. War Dept. Library. There was also a copy in the library of Antonio Cinovas del Castillo.
