Educational Mission Central to our
mission is the provision of educational programming which will further faculty,
staff, student, and public utilization and understanding of the museum and its
collection, of museums in general, and of the arts. To accomplish this, we offer
tours, talks, materials for teachers, an education database, artists’
demonstrations, and written materials. Our education philosophy centers on
bringing together the needs of visitors and the resources of the museum
(collection, exhibition, staff, volunteer, and financial), and balancing
responsibility to the university (of which we are a department) with service to
the community. In facilitating communication between the work of art and the
viewer, we subscribe to a philosophy of learner-centered programming informed by
a thorough knowledge of the collection, and methods and strategies for effective
teaching.
