"That's the biggest internet sin that a website producer can commit -
take away a resource that teachers use without warning and
without thinking about the hundreds, or thousands even,
of teaching plans that might be using it."

-- TES on the BBC removing the Look & Read websites, November 2003

The BBC had a pair of superb educational websites to accompany Look and Read stories, full of games and activities for kids to do, great fun and with clear teaching aims.

Unfortunately the BBC removed the sites in 2003 due to (alleged) dwindling use and their inability to get them updated. You can no longer play them on the BBC website, so here are archived versions for downloading and playing offline.

You can get the answers to the final levels of all these games on the Website Cheats page.

Spywatch

Spywatch website
©BBC Practice spy skills, then go and investigate suspects and finally piece together the clues to help Norman, Dennis, Polly and Mary work out what's happening in Westbourne. There are educational activities to do on the way to solving all the clues.

This is a slightly modified version of the Site Download previously offered by the BBC. I have fixed a few bad links and removed the references to re-downloading the site you'd already downloaded. I also deactivated the links to the BBC website (except the ones embedded in the Flash because I can't edit Flash, sorry) so the site is now a properly "offline" version.
Revised version April 2004: Sorted out the Spyclub section, populated the Gallery pages with content from the Internet Archive & removed references to emailing the Spymaster since the BBC no longer support this site so there's no point emailing them about it. Links to the Disguises and Memory games now go straight to the games themelves instead of trying to "download" them first, and the whole package is now actually a bit smaller than it was before!
GENERAL WARNING: This is an ".exe" file. This sort of file can be very, very dangerous to your computer and you should never get them off the internet unless you really trust where you get them from. I say this file is fine and you can run it safely. But do you trust me...?

Download ZIP file Spywatch the website
Download ZIP file [2.58Mb] - right-click and 'Save Target As'

Instructions for use:
  1. Download the spywatch.exe file to you computer from the link above. (Windows only)
  2. Double-click to run the file. A box will come up asking you to "unzip" it. You can choose where on your computer to put the site by clicking the Browse button in the middle, or just leave it as is. Then click Unzip at the top.
  3. Go to where you just unzipped the site. By default this will be c:\lookandread\spywatch but you might have changed that.
  4. Double-click the file spywatch.htm to start the site - you're in!

Zzaap and the Word Master

Zzaap and the Word Master website
©BBC Play lots of nice educational games in all the locations from the story, collecting passwords that finally let you into the Word Master's study to play the final games.

This is a complete copy of the Word Master site that used to be available on the BBC website. The pages have been trimmed of BBCi headers and other superfluous stuff, and various bits have been updated to make them relevant to offline viewing. All links to external sites have been disabled so the whole thing can be explored without being connected to the internet.
The Full Version file contains the whole lot, including the games, the screensaver, the five minute audio clip, the teacher's notes and everything, so it's a pretty big file. The Games Only file is much smaller and only contains the games. Note that the Competition page which was removed by the BBC several years ago is not included here.
GENERAL WARNING: These are ".exe" files. This sort of file can be very, very dangerous to your computer and you should never get them off the internet unless you really trust where you get them from. I say these files are fine and you can run them safely. But do you trust me...?
