Cloud Burst

Cloud Burst wallpaper A still of Richard Carpenter in his writer's studio, busy reading from the "book-of-the-film" of Cloud Burst. On his TV monitor are the heroes of the story - Tim Barber, Dick Turner, Ram Pandit and Jenny Barber. Compiled by me from original screen captures; the actual images and characters etc are ©BBC.

The King's Dragon

The King's Dragon wallpaper A close-up photograph of the genuine King's Dragon armring prop, as used in the original television serial back in 1977. Some restoration work has been undertaken to preserve this unique item, the only surviving example from a set of two.
This image has been framed by me from a photograph by Neil Lucas. The King's Dragon armring was designed by John Friedlander, and is ©BBC.

800×600 (132kb) | 1024×768 (273kb)

The King's Dragon wallpaper A close-up photograph of the Wessex Arm-Ring, a faithful reproduction of King Harold's golden arm-ring created by Neil Lucas, inspired by The King's Dragon television programme. Copies of this reproduction are available to buy.
The reproduction King's Dragon and this photograph are ©Neil Lucas.

800×600 (172kb) | 1024×768 (282kb)

The Boy From Space

The Boy From Space wallpaper A collage of pictures from the 1980s version of the Boy From Space pupils' book. Clockwise from top-left you have Peep-Peep's Father, the scheming Thin Space-Man, Peep-Peep himself, Dan, Helen, Mr Bunting and Tom.
All the illustrations are by Alan Burton, and the scans were provided by Shaqui Le Vesconte. I done the compilation. All the underlying illustrations are, obviously, ©BBC.

800×600 (216kb) | 1024×768 (334kb)

The Boy From Space wallpaper An original publicity photo of Cosmo and Wordy from the teaching bits of the 1980s Boy From Space. The photo was retrieved from the BBC Photograph Library for the TES (26/03/2004 p.9) to illustrate an article on 80 years of BBC schools broadcasting. Wordy seems to have sustained a serious eye injury as his right pupil is hanging off painfully. This is a scan from a newspaper and the image quality reflects this; the photo is ©BBC.

800×600 (132kb) | 1024×768 (191kb)

Dark Towers

Dark Towers wallpaper The floor plan of Dark Towers, surrounded by pictures of the places Tracy and Edward visit in the story, such as The Old Tower, The Old Well, The Old Coach House and The Old Library. Do you see a pattern here?
The screen grabs, the graphic and the compilation were all done by me. The underlying images and concepts are, obviously, ©BBC.

800×600 (227kb) | 1024×768 (345kb)

Dark Towers wallpaper This wallpaper was sent in by Samuel Ball, a visitor to the site. It has the spooky picture of Dark Towers from the cover of the story book, along with the Look and Read and Dark Towers logos. The pictures are ©BBC and the composition is ©Samuel Ball.

If anybody else wants to send in their own wallpaper design, I'd be very pleased to add it here!

800×600 (140kb) | 1024×768 (196kb)

Geordie Racer

Geordie Racer wallpaper A lovely colourful drawing of Newcastle highlighting all the people and places seen in Geordie Racer, with Spuggy standing in front holding Blue Flash, and a Great North Run poster. The drawing is uncredited, but was used on the cover of the computer software notes - the Run poster has been cunningly positioned to block out the writing on the cover - and is probably ©BBC.

800×600 (140kb) | 1024×768 (206kb)

Through The Dragon's Eye

Through The Dragon's Eye wallpaper Amanda and Scott watch as Jenny paints the eye on Gorwen, just before the dragon comes to life and invites the children into Pelamar. This was the main publicity photo for the series, used on the front of the pupils' and teacher's books as well as on the 'Look and Read follows shortly' slide on TV.
The photograph is by Chris Capstick, and I scanned it and added the writing to it. The photograph and all the characters and concepts are ©BBC.

800×600 (142kb) | 1024×768 (207kb)

Through The Dragon's Eye wallpaper Another photograph showing Amanda, Jenny and Scott with Gorwen the dragon.
The photograph is uncredited, but is ©BBC, and it's scanned straight off the Literacy Resource Pack, so the composition is also ©BBC.

800×600 (95kb) | 1024×768 (185kb)

Spywatch

Spywatch wallpaper Norman, Polly, Dennis and Mary hidden in a bush watching out for spies - this is the main publicity photograph for Spywatch.
The photograph is by John Jefford and is ©BBC.

800×600 (115kb) | 1024×768 (213kb)

Captain Crimson

Captain Crimson wallpaper A large scan of the title panel from a Captain Crimson comic strip, as written and drawn by Thomas's dad.
The illustrations are by Mark Bennington and the composition is ©BBC.

800×600 (163kb) | 1024×768 (213kb)

Captain Crimson wallpaper The real-life Captain Crimson, standing in front of the Space Pirates adventure from episode three. In the background, his starship Galileo, his arch-enemy Commander Krinklion (who's female by the way) looking annoyed, and his crew First Officer Optic, Science Officer Dr Laser, and Chief Engineer Widget. Compiled by me from illustrations by Mark Bennington and an uncredited photograph, all ©BBC.

800×600 (136kb) | 1024×768 (199kb)

Shadow Play

Shadow Play wallpaper Hester is invited by the Trimbys onto the wherry Albion while Nathan stands by. This is the principal publicity photo for the story, used on the front of the story books and merchandise. The composition is a bit strange, with a big (symbolic, I suppose) gap in the middle between Mr Trimby and the kids, and it's generally tall rather than wide, but there you go. The photographer is uncredited, and the image is ©BBC.

800×600 (179kb) | 1024×768 (273kb)

More wallpapers may possibly be added later.
I'm rather proud of these wallpapers. The Boy From Space one especially is faithful to original illustration concepts, I think, except for that awful gradient fill. The Dark Towers one isn't that great because it lacks focus, but nobody's forcing you to download it. If you think you can do any better, let me know (please don't send any email attachments bigger than 200kb or so!) If you have a wallpapers site or something, you're welcome to mirror these - it'd make me feel important - but please link back to www.lookandread.myby.co.uk. It's only polite.
