Director: P.J. Hogan Stars: Isla Fisher, Hugh Dancy, Krysten Ritter (Full Cast) Studio: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures The Plot: Charming Manhattanite Rebecca Bloomwood (Fisher) is an out-of-control spender/fashionista, so it's a bit ironic when she lands a job as an advice columnist for a financial magazine, and she becomes an instant celebrity -- complete with access to all the fabulous things she so desires. But will her compulsive habits ruin her career, and her new-found romance?
THE BUZZ: It's a chick-lit showdown this month, with Isla Fisher in Shopaholic and a clutch of serious contenders that is the principal cast of He's Just Not That Into You. We love an underdog, especially one as otherworldly beautiful as Ms. Fisher (when will she and Sacha Baron Cohen tie the knot?), but Shopaholic descends from the massively popular novels by real-life financial journalist Madeleine Wickham (pen name: Sophie Kinsella), whose Undomestic Goddess is being developed by Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal. The trailer is a bit of a puzzle -- as in, just because someone is good at slapstick, that doesn't mean you have to incorporate it into your script. Also, we can't tell if the tone is supposed to be highbrow, low, or just kinda all over the place. Message Boards: Ok, DO Panic!!!! | This movie is going to be terrible!!! Director: Tom Tykwer Stars: Clive Owen, Naomi Watts, Armin Mueller-Stahl (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: Interpol Agent Louis Salinger (Clive Owen) and Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Whitman (Naomi Watts) pool their resources in an attempt to break up an international arms dealing ring financed by a high-profile bank.
THE BUZZ: Has it really taken ten years for Hollywood to get the Run, Lola, Run director to make his first American, big-budget action-thriller? Embarrassing. Still, who cares, with Owen and Watts also on board, all is forgiven; plus, whoever thought to re-team Watts with Armin Mueller-Stahl is a casting genius. What we also love the most about this picture sight unseen? The fact that we finally get to see what Clive Owen would have been like as 007. Rumor has it the project was delayed for a bit to tweak it as more of an action film ... Message Boards: Says more about modern Art than banking | Am I crazy or was this a boring trailer? Director: Marcus Nispel Stars: Jared Padalecki, Amanda Righetti, Derek Mears (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures The Plot: A group of young adults discover a boarded up Camp Crystal Lake, where they soon encounter Jason Voorhees (Mears) and his deadly intentions.
THE BUZZ: Most of the behind-the-camera dudes who made the well-received Texas Chainsaw Massacre are present here, including director Marcus Nispel and producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller. Form and Fuller sneaked some footage and addressed fan concerns at Comic-Con this year, a sign of their commitment to the horror genre and its never-ending barrage of remakes and reboots. Expect to be treated to an old-school horror movie, heavy on slasher tension and a more aggressive Jason -- Derek Mears described his take on Voorhees as more of a fast-moving predator who sets up his prey. Also, Jason's mom figures into the action somehow! Director: James Gray Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Gwyneth Paltrow, Vinessa Shaw (Full Cast) Studio: Magnolia Pictures The Plot: Leonard (Phoenix) returns to Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, where he soon falls for two very different women: the family friend his parents wish he would marry (Shaw) and his beautiful but volatile new neighbor (Paltrow).
THE BUZZ: Just in case you haven't heard Joaquin's confirmation that he's quitting acting, Two Lovers, which reunites Mr. Phoenix with We Own the Night director James Gray, looks to be his last big-screen performance. But I'm thinking he (in real life) might be as volatile as Gwyneth's character in this romantic drama, and he might reconsider his decision after a timeout. If not: Au revoir, Joaquin. We love you and we hope that you don't write songs that sound like the Coldplay. Message Boards: Dostoevsky. | Boring movie with nothing new to say... Director: Matteo Garrone Stars: Gianfelice Imparato, Salvatore Abruzzese, Toni Servillo (Full Cast) Studio: IFC Films The Plot: A drama of five interconnected stories, each of them illustrating the levels of organized crime in modern-day Naples.
THE BUZZ: Matteo Garrone's adaptation of Roberto Saviano's sensation-causing book burst onto the international scene by winning the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes back in May. En route to its U.S. release, it earned 5 European Film Awards, became Italy's Foreign-Language Oscar pick (eclipsing Il Divo in both instances), found an American sponsor in Martin Scorsese, and -- oh yeah -- three of the film's actors have been connected to actual-real mob activities. Other fun facts about this should've-been-Oscar contender: Author Saviano, who had a hand in the screenplay, has been living under 24-hour protection since the release of his book; however, to strengthen the film's anti-hero sentiment, Saviano is not a character in the narrative. Director: Howard Hall Stars: Jim Carrey (Full Cast) Studio: IMAX The Plot: Jim Carrey narrates this underwater look at the diverse coastal regions of Southern Australia, New Guinea, and the Indo-Pacific areas, and the impact of global warming on the oceans.
THE BUZZ: Deep Sea is like the Dark Side of the Moon of IMAX movies, in that it has been in general release since for over two years, and has grossed nearly $60 million in that time. No wonder Disney is rushing this sequel into theaters, with all the right behind-the-camera talent back in place. (Though I feel like they traded down a bit in the narrator department?) Director: Ken Kwapis Stars: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Connelly (Full Cast) Studio: New Line Cinema The Plot: Romantic woes affect an interconnected group of Baltimore singles and marrieds. User Rating:
THE BUZZ: We thought 2008 was all about 80s retro, but this movie looks to kick up the breezy nostalgia of the late 90s -- back when most of Into You's cast was in ascension. The source material here, the best-selling book by former Sex and the City story editor Greg Behrendt, is also responsible for the wayback effect. We wish star/producer Drew Barrymore would have shelled out for more reliable behind-the-camera talent, since the writer-direction trio makes us say yikes. Speaking of Ms. Barrymore, who is directing her first feature with Ellen Page in the lead role, she hooked up with co-star Justin Long during filming (and then they broke up -- old news!); elsewhere, Jennifer Aniston was linked to Bradley Cooper for a bit. But no one wanted to even flirt with Ben Affleck. Here'zzzzz the trailer. Message Boards: shouldn't they just rename this movie | Scarjo is oddball here. Director: Pierre Morel Stars: Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation The Plot: A former spy (Neeson) relies on his old skills to save his daughter (Grace), who was kidnapped by slave traders during her vacation in Paris. User Rating:
THE BUZZ: Director Pierre Morel's follow up to the nouveau classique District B13 is looking stressful! And yet how awesome will it be to watch Liam Neeson throw a punch in pursuit of the baddies who made off with Maggie Grace? You have to leave it to Luc Besson and his Transporter cronies (Morel was the cinematographer for the first two Frank Martin chapters and co-screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen has had a hand in all three movies) for making a real-life scenario so freaky/engaging, though I'm hoping I won't be spoiled as to the story's twists and resolution before it comes out Stateside since the movie has been out in Asia and Europe for months. Though I will say Ms. Grace, who looks a bit like Jennifer Connelly here, does not do a full reveal for her legion of followers. Message Boards: Ruthlessness of Bryan too heartless? Director: Henry Selick Stars: Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, John Hodgman (Full Cast) Studio: Focus Features The Plot: A secret door in her family's new house offers a passage way to an unusual parallel world for young Coraline. User Rating:
THE BUZZ: Director Selick (the unsung hero behind Tim Burton's A Nightmare Before Christmas) finally gets his chance to shine, or at least step out of Burton's shadow and with the perfect material for him. By perfect, we mean super creepy. And by unsung, we mean he directed Nightmare not Burton (look it up). If you're a Burton fan or thought the underwater claymation scenes from The Life Aquatic were the best part of that movie, then Selick's solo work is for you. If you're a fan of 3-D stop-motion animation, then the LA Times' behind-the-scenes photo gallery is just for you. Message Boards: Completely sheltered kids don’t turn out that well… true? Director: Steve Carr Stars: Kevin James, Keir O'Donnell (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: When a shopping mall is overtaken by a gang of organized crooks, it's up to the a mild-mannered security guard (James) to save the day. User Rating:
THE BUZZ: Cuddly Kevin James ventures out on his own for the first time with a leading-man project that feels like it'd be better suited for a lowered-expectations comedian like Rob Schneider. Or Dane Cook. But I guess you put a chubby guy in a rent-a-cop outfit and the jokes just write themselves. (Or perhaps not, as evidenced by this Blart-related viral video.) Meanwhile, director Steve Carr continues to gravitate away from his still-kinda-funny R-rated debut. Director: Harald Zwart Stars: Steve Martin, Jean Reno, Emily Mortimer (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia Pictures The Plot: Insp. Jacques Clouseau (Martin) teams up with a squad of International detectives who are just as bumbling as he is. Their mission: Stop a globe-trotting thief who specializes in stealing historical artifacts. User Rating:
THE BUZZ: Ooh, they pulled a Rachel Dawes here and replaced Kevin Kline with John Cleese in the role of Chief Inspector Dreyfus. Shawn Levy passed on the sequel in order to helm Night at the Museum 2, making way for Agent Cody Banks director Harald Zwart (we'd like to hear Martin-as-Clouseau say his name). That must have saved the production beaucoup dollars. All of this switcheroo neatly conceals the plot, which sounds like Clouseau hunting down Nic Cage in National Treasure. Luckily, this one has even cuter support staff, with a band of inspectors that includes Andy Garcia, Aishwarya Rai, and Alfred Molina. Message Boards: how do you find aishwariya rai? Director: Danny Boyle Loveleen Tandan Stars: Dev Patel, Freida Pinto (Full Cast) Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures The Plot: The story of how impoverished Indian teen Jamal Malik (Patel) became a contestant on the Hindi version of "Who Wants to be A Millionaire?" -- an endeavor made without prize money in mind, rather, an effort to prove his love for his friend Latika (Pinto), who is an ardent fan of the show. User Rating:
THE BUZZ: Danny Boyle's latest has had quite the ride on the way its awards-friendly berth; originally purchased by Warner Independent Pictures, the film's future was in limbo when WIP closed its doors given the gloomy climate for indie/art-house films. For a minute there, Slumdog almost went direct to DVD (which may not come as a surprise to those who saw Sunshine). "Dickensian" and "Capraesque" are two descriptors being used by those who saw it at the Telluride Film Festival, though to me it sounds like Boyle is giving a nod to his contemporary, Michael Winterbottom, who often (successfully) mines for gold outside of his native UK. Director: Paul McGuigan Stars: Camilla Belle, Dakota Fanning, Chris Evans (Full Cast) Studio: Summit Entertainment The Plot: In Hong Kong, a trio of young people with special abilities are pursued by a clandestine U.S. government agency who wants the gifted ones back in their fold. User Rating:
THE BUZZ: I think director Paul McGuigan (Wicker Park, Lucky Number Slevin) has a thing for too-intricate storylines; during Push's 2008 Comic-Con panel, poor Camilla Belle stumbled through a plot explanation that began to sound like playing rounds of Magic: The Gathering. Djimon Hounsou, meanwhile, could barely remember his role in the movie. Good thing Dakotah Fanning then popped out to, like, tell the crowd she finally lost all of her baby teeth. Or something.
