Hi Robert;

I just visited your site.....its GREAT!!

I thought you might want to consider adding me as a repair source for medium format equipment. I was factory trained on Rapid and Koni Omega and Konica equipment at Berkey Marketing, Woodside New York in 1973.

For the past 20 years my repair business has been centered on Bronica, Mamiya and Kowa. From what I have seen there seems to be a lack of techs for older equipment, Bronica and Kowa in general. I receive both Bronica & Kowa referrals from a local shop who service Hassy and Mamiya. While there are times that I can't do much for some older cameras I do everything I can to locate parts and to help owners with their problems.

My company is now Friday Creek Camera with a web site at www.mfcrepair.com email at nedsnake@earthlink.net

I am now located in Bellingham WA and can be reached at (360) 738 2751.

My website will soon carry a toll free phone number.

Thank You

Mike Jenkins

Subject: Bronica D, C, S, S2, S2A, EC, ECTL

I repair probably 10 to 20 focal plane Bronicas every month and to my knowledge am the only one in the country repairing these on a regular basis. There are several mistakes in my reading of your Bronica tips. These are fine cameras and the reason there are so many problems repairing them is that few repair shops ever got enough in to really become versed in the problems they had. For the most part the repairs that I have seen done in them are attrocious and wrong. They can still be brought up to a standard of high quality, however there are some clutch parts that are now becoming more difficult to obtain and will render the camera unusable. The ECTL has a board in the metering circuit, (one of 5), that goes out and when it does it leaves the camera dead. Bronica did correct that in the very end of their production in a metering modification but these are not common and telling the new design from the old is impossible without disassembling. Finially, foam deterioration of the focusing frame and the mirror dampening plate on the EC/ECTL are a problem for focusing and deterioration of the sub-mirror stop on the early EC is a problem which causes the mirror to hang.

These are the most common problems of these cameras otherwise they are quite fine.

Hi Catherine!

I don't know of any Nikon repair shops in London, but the best Nikon camera shop is Grays of Westminster in Pimlico, just 5-10 minutes walk from Victoria Railway Station. They deal only in Nikons and are very helpful. You could try phoning them beforehand (44 171 828 4925) or emailing them (info@graysofwestminster.co.uk). They have a web page:www.graysofwestminster.co.uk. Hopefully they can help. Have a good visit!

A source of ring resistors for meters of older Nikons

Mark,

I was in the same predicament a year ago, and found that Southeast Camera Repair, 6300 Jimmy Carter Blvd., Norcross, GA, 770-441-7700, had found an alternative source for new ring resistors. It would be best to call and talk to Kenny, their Nikon tech, before sending your finder. They did sucessfully repair mine (FTN finder) for about $60.00. Good luck.

Hi Robert,

I noticed that you didn't include the following repairmen for Hasselblad repairss:

1. John Kovacs of Hilton Command Exposure

New Hampshire

Don't have address nor telephone on hand. He and Chris Filonovich of CF Repairs was involved with the modification of the Hasselblad camera for NASA.

Also does custom modification depending upon customer's needs.

2. Brad Sherman of Precision Camera Repair

Formerly from Hasselblad Repair Dept to Gil Ghitelmann Cameras. I had used him very extensively and found him to be very reliable and he stands behind his work.

3. David Odess

Address and telephone unknown. However he advertises in Rangefinder magazine.

No experience but just email conversation. Very pleasant and would recommend him in addition to the above people.

Hope you can add this tidbit of information to your wonderful website.

I don't know if the cell threads are the same as for the Synchro-Rapid 800 but would guess that they are. Kodak sold lenses in England in Epsilon shutters. I don't know if these were the same as the Supermatic but may be more common there. I don't know who works on the Sychro Rapid 800 or what exactly its weakness is. The Graflex 1000 shutter, used on Super Speed Graphics has plastic spindles which simply break under use. The Kodak shutter may have similar problems. There are some good reasons why leaf type shutters were not commonly built with speeds above about 1/500th second. Some other shutter repair people in the U.S. who are worth talking to are: Fred Lustig 4790 Caughlin Pkwy #433 Reno, NV 89509 1 775 746 0111 Graflex Parts and Service No e-mail or web site. Not cheap. (probably no one who is good is cheap). Its possible none of these well work on the Super Synchromatic. 101mm Ektars are not particularly rare so be careful of spending more to fix this one than replacement cost. The 101mm and 127mm Ektars were the first of the shorter focal length series for use on press cameras. Both are exceptional lenses. Both tend to develop internal haze which is easily cleaned off. I've posted instructions for opening the lens cell many times to this group. If you decide to get the shutter repaired any of the above will be able to clean the indside of the front element at the same time. Steve Grimes does excellent work but can't work magic. I think he has had too many bad experiences with the 800 shutter to attempt them. --- Richard Knoppow Los Angeles, CA, USA. dickburk@ix.netcom.com

About 15 years ago, I had my Plaubel Makinas (67) looked at and worked on in local repair shops in Kansas City and Chicago. They could not do anything good with my old cameras. (I never had any experience with the local Mamiya repair shop that Bob mentions---they might be great.) The fourth repair place I tried was very lucky for me: Through an add in Shutterbug magazine, I found Ken Ruth's place, Photography on Bald Mountain. It is in California. Telephone 831-423-4465 [9-5 Wed. Thur. 9-12 Fri.] Ship to 113 Bald Mountain Davenport, CA 95017. home.pacbell.net/baldmtn On his website, he wrote "CAMERA AND OPTICAL INSTRUMENT REPAIR, FABRICATION, MODIFICATION, AND RESTORATION. SPECIALIZING IN OBSOLETE AND VERY UNUSUAL EQUIPMENT." Give him a call, and he may well tell you something useful and helpful for free. See if he knows about your cameras, he sure knows Plaubel Makinas. In the last 15 years, he has fixed both of my Makinas, and they have been trouble free for several years now. Please, if you do take your camera to a local repair place, and you have vibes that they just do not understand your camera, or do not value it properly, please just assume your vibes are correct and leave. I wish I had. Jerry Fusselman

What about speed? I gave up sending my gear to Nikon UK when they introduced a supplementary charge for "professional service" which took just as long as the "service" offered without the charge. The good people seem to leave Nikon UK and set up repair businesses of their own. For example, there are probably more Nikon UK trained repair staff at Fixation (Vauxhall, London SE, including two former Nikon UK service managers ... !) than there are at Nikon UK's base at Kingston, Surrey! Of course, what Nikon UK don't tell you is that a surprising proportion of their repair work is contracted out to other Nikon approved repair companies (including Fixation) who turn around repairs in about the same number of *days* as Nikon UK seem to need *weeks*. If the shutter just needs cleaning its easy to do yourself. You may be able to loosen up the speed regulator without even taking the shutter apart. If you remove the front lens cell you can see the inside mechanism. Use a small brush to apply some Ronsonol to the gears. Cock and fire the shutter a few times. That may get it back to life. If you want to do a proper clening contact me via e-mail. Supermatics are relatively simple and very rugged shutters.
