Eyvindur P. Eiríksson

Eyvindur P. Eiriksson (b.1935) won the Halldor Laxness Literary Prize for his epic saga The Land Behind Eternity.

Land Behind Eternity

(Landið handan fjarskans, 1997)

The Halldor Laxness Literary Prize

A grand epic saga which takes place in Finland, Sweden and Denmark in the late 18th century. Based on the life of the author's forebears, the story describes a young man who experiences the horror and futility of war, and his quest for himself and a better world.

"... a particularly subtle work of literature. Its plot is tightly woven, its descriptions powerful, its subject dramatic and its characterization full of a peculiar primeval force."

Awards Panel Remarks

"The Land Behind Eternity ranks as a major achievement. ... a novel of vast scope which deserves to be noticed. In my opinion this is one of the most substantial novels to appear in recent years."
