Capcom makes a lot of M-rated titles like Resident Evil 4, Killer 7, and Devil May Cry 3. But did you know Capcom can also make great kids' games, too? Mostly back in the 8 and 16-bit days, Capcom made a lot of great games with the Disney license. Top-notch titles include DuckTales and Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers. Heck, Capcom even made a good game out of Goof Troop! In Disney's Magical Quest 3 on the Game Boy Advance, Huey, Dewey, and Louie find an old storybook up in Donald's attic. The evil Baron Pete traps the boys inside the storybook, and now it's up to Mickey and Donald to go into Storybook Land to save them!
The game plays like a standard 2D platformer. You choose between Mickey and Donald before you start your adventure. Both players can pick up enemies and blocks and toss them at other baddies, but special costumes give them other skills, too. The knight costume helps them fight bad guys, the woodcutter outfit allows them to climb trees, and the magician gear lets them perform magic tricks that help them find secret areas and avoid traps. Some of the costumes give Mickey and Donald different sets of skills. For instance, Mickey's knight costume won't fit Donald, so the duck must make do with a barrel for armor. Mickey's knight suit will sink in water, but Donald in his barrel can float on the water's surface. Plus, Donald can hide in his barrel and roll around. The game plays a little differently depending on whom you pick.
If you have a GBA Link cable, two Game Boy Advance systems and two copies of the game, you can play the adventure with two players co-operating as well as different battle mini-games. Classic gamers may find Disney's Magical Quest 3 interesting because even though it's a port of a 16-bit title, this game never made it to the US from Japan even though the first two did. So despite being a port from the Super Nintendo, most American players have never played it.
Graphics are lush and colorful and the sprites are almost as well animated as a classic Disney cartoon. Donald even has his classic temper tantrums in the game! Music is cute and catchy and the play control is spot-on. The game is short and easy, but Disney nuts and classic 2D game fans will enjoy the game anyway.
Kids will enjoy the familiar Disney characters and light challenge level of Disney's Magical Quest 3. Violence is only the tame Mario hop-and-bop variety. Older kids may get bored quicker due to the short quest, but younger gamers will probably get a kick out of Mickey and Donald's adventure.
