Sadly, no. I am a really slow crafter of short stories and need time for them to perk even after writing. I suppose I should whip up a few for eventualities just like this, but ...

However, you've got a shot. I truly did LOVE your novel. It has potential.

Justin, dust off that novel you wrote, find a short story in it that highlights or embellishes a part of it and submit it to: Baen' contest

I love Baen publications and believe your story fits their tastes well. Of course you can't submit the WHOLE novel, but you can send a teaser with a well-chosen short. (Think Bujold's Mountains of Mourning in her Vorkosigan series.

I've been struggling with a synopsis and query letter for my MG novel, and hope that a literary agent, publisher, and plenty of children will like my goofy sense of humor too. Thanks for the vote of confidence.

I once sat across the aisle on the bus from a guy with an electric bass, who substituted for the regular bass player in the band Foreigner. They were one of his favorite bands growing up, he knew all their songs and was thrilled to get to play with them. We talked about orchestrations of rock music, which he thought could never be done right. I think the failures tried to imitate rock music, rather than adapt creatively to a new medium.

Is that synopsis of yours for adult SF? Louis L'Amour said that he experienced most of what his characters went through, and you're working outside in that cold (along with your diverse skills and interests) I'm sure it lends realism to later scenes, the way your experience in plays enriches the dialog. By the way... what do you think of Gary Paulsen?

As I recall, a guy named Paul played bass in a punny rock band from Liverpool. He wrote, too.

ROFL!

Yep, electric bass. And you're right about the lakes. It was -36 Friday night, but warmed up to a balmy -20 this morning.

Thanks for the words about my sales. I had a pretty good run of luck this fall. And yes, I do write novels occasionally. I actually managed to a YA novel to usborne Publishing last fall - which i'm still a l biut in shock over - and have a non-kid's mss ready to start shopping around, provided I ever get the blasted synopsis finished!

Thanks again!

Your 10k lakes are probably frozen over this time of year, so I imagine you were fishing for electric or accoustic bass last night through a hole in the ice. I hope you warmed up with the blues, in the lemon lite.

Congrats of course on the 06 sails, especially the Asimov's windfall. You've sold a number of pieces to Boy's, but I think you've been after the big SF mags for a while and it must be satisfying to finally get a story through their eds. Do you have any book-length MSS currently making the rounds, or are you still concentrating on Bermuda shorts?

Thanks, ET!

It's funny. I'm not afraid of heights in any way. I'm a pilot, a rock climber, I've shingled countless roofs and generally like high places. BUT, let my feet get above my head and I'm scrambling like a cat tossed over the fence to get right-side up, and usually land square on my rear-end. In that rig, thougth, it was really easy to flip, and to be honest, I had a blast doing them.

Look out cirque de soleil, here I come!

A good day yesterday at the Beaverhead county fair. - Yes, I really do live in a county called Beaverhead - Shealan won Best of Class for her embroidery project, Colter ran around like a maniac, having a grand time as only a four-year old can, and I managed a double back flip on the trapeze rig at the carnival. For the record, I can't even manage a forward flip on the trampoline at home!

Even the short video I helped the kid who worked for us all summer took Best in photography for his class, whicch I thought was really cool. He put a lot of work into it, and despite his cast, (me, his dad, Shealan, his brother...) it turned out pretty well.

And then, came home to find an email that Boys' Life is accepting a story. Yep, it was a good day.

Hey, I didn't complain!

It was Utopiales, a massive SF "festival" in Nantes - the other guests were Brian Aldiss, Terry Pratchett, Tim Powers, Jeffrey Ford, Lucius Shepard, Norman Spinrad and about a million other bigger than me (not to mention a huge number of French writers and writers from all over Europe and even South America), so I was just grateful to be there at all!

One of the organisers, for some reason, confused me with Terry Pratchett... I ran into Pratchett half an hour later and said, "Someone thought I was you, which is really stretching credibility to the limit," and he said, "Yes, the managed to insult both of us in the same sentence!"
