Dear BEN,
When reading about scoring averages in 501 (points per dart or turn), are the attempts at doubling out
considered part of the average? When I read that someone’s doubling out percentage is over 50% is the percent per dart or turn?
How would the calculation work if you were to start a turn at 170, and after 3 darts you were down to
70, and in the next turn two darts were used to take out the 70. Does the first turn at 170 count in the percentages?
Another scenerio I have a question about is if you had 50 point lefts left and two darts in hand, if the
first dart was at the 10 for the double-top finish, does the fact that the first dart wasn’t thrown at a double bull effect the percentages (understanding that the “no
guts, no glory” points take a hit).
Thank you. —TR Wood
Ed– When calculating Points Per Dart Average (PPDA), all darts thrown from the first to
the final double are counted in calculating the average, even if some bounce out or miss the scoring part of the board when shooting at a double. Obviously,
different PPDAs must be calculated for matches that are Double In/Doubles Out, Straight In/Double Out, or Straight In/Straight Out.
A Double Out Percentage is calculated only using the number of darts thrown at a double.
Therefore, if a player has 50 remaining and throws a 10 to set up double twenty, the set up shot at the 10 is not counted in the Double Out Percentage, but is counted in the PPDA. Once a player throws at a double, all darts are counted after that shot in calculating the Double Out Percentage. If the same player with 50 remaining chooses to throw at the double bull and scores a single bull, the next dart to set up another double is still counted toward the Double Out Percentage even though it is not actually thrown at a double.
Regarding both the PPDA and the Double Out Percentage, a bust on the 1st or 2nd dart of
a turn counts as a full turn, 3 darts thrown.
