Situated in the northern islands, 68 km south from Agrihan and 48 km north from Alamagan, the 48 km² island of Pagan consists of two stratovolcanoes (North and South Pagan) that are connected to each other by a narrow isthmus. The northern volcano, covered in brown ash in this image, reaches a height of 570 m and is one of the most active volcanoes of the Mariana Islands. South Pagan, which has been the least active of the two in historical times, reaches 548 m in height.
