Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) is joining with Dutch KPN Telecom's mobile unit, NTT Docomo and five mobile phone operators to link Sony's PlayStation to the mobile Internet, Reuters reports. KPN Mobile, NTT Docomo and SCEI are reportedly jointly conducting research into gaining access to the mobile Internet via the PlayStation console and extending PlayStation games to the mobile phones.





Website Announces EverQuest Class Action 1/29/01 16:14


EverQuest may become embroiled in a class action lawsuit concerning players' rights to sell their characters and items. A website backed by Dennis Flanders and hosted on GravitySpot.com is posting an official announcement of intent to begin a class action suit. Poland-based CODA Development is readying its real-time stategy PC title Starmageddon to show to publishers at Milia in Cannes, France.





Mr. Driller to PC 1/29/01 15:32


NEC will publish a PC version of Namco's Mr. Driller in Japan on Feb. 10. Retailing for 2980 yen ($26), the PC version will add some new features to this popular puzzle game. For more information about Mr. Driller, read the PSOne review here.



Five Secret Square Titles 1/29/01 15:22


Square still has several unannounced titles in development in its top-secret labs. By all accounts, five unannounced games are in the works, and despite the company's public silence, rumors abound. According to sources in Japan, two of the titles are sports games. One is reportedly an online strategy game. Two are thought to be RPGs, including one for the PlayStation2 and one for a handheld system, most likely the WonderSwan.



PS2 Dearth Ends Tomorrow 1/29/01 15:06


According to an email message that went out to PlayStation Underground members, "a number" of PlayStation2 systems will go on sale tomorrow at playstation.com. (PlayStation Underground is a free membership program that provides discount offers, game news, free demo discs, and access to restricted areas of Sony's websites.) Systems will reportedly be available on a first-to-click, first-to-get basis.



Carmack Inducted to Hall of Fame 1/29/01 14:30


The Academy of Interactive Arts and Science will induct John Carmack into its hall of fame at the Fourth Annual Interactive Achievement Awards on March 22. Carmack, founder and technical director of id Software, will be the fourth inductee into the hall of fame, which includes Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto (1998), Firaxis' Sid Meier (1999) and Square's Hironobu Sakaguchi (2000).



PS2 Broadband Adapter This Year 1/29/01 11:24


Sony's head of development Phil Harrison and UK President Chris Deering yesterday confirmed to Daily Radar UK that Sony's PS2 broadband adapter will be launched globally this year. It had been thought previously that the add-on device, which not only gives broadband/ethernet connectivity to the PS2 but adds a hard drive too, would initially only be available in Japan. It now appears that the US and Europe will be treated to the device much sooner than expected.





Dolby Names Game Developer Relations Director 1/29/01 11:21


Terry Bratcher has been appointed director of Game Developer Relations for Dolby Laboratories, Inc. He will oversee the activities of the Game Developer Relations Groups located in San Francisco, the United Kingdom and Japan, and the creation of the Dolby Virtual Incubator Group (VIP). Bratcher has served as a consultant to the International Digital Software Association, Sony Computer Entertainment America, Nintendo America, Sega, Electronic Arts, EBAY and Loeb & Loeb LLP, where he headed an industry-wide anti-piracy initiative. Before joining Dolby full time, he served Dolby as a consultant, helping to organize the company's gaming business strategy.

Sega of Japan has announced a new adventure game for the Dreamcast called Es. The game, on three GD-ROMs, is scheduled for release in Japan on Apr. 5 for 6800 yen ($58). The game contains a large cast of real actors in a suspense plot revolving around a police inspector's investigation of a homicide. The inspector must solve mysteries and round up the criminals. The title features two hours of voice and will offer a 360 degree panoramic exploration system.



Armored Core Gets Networked 1/26/01 15:10


From Software has announced a network compatible version of its PlayStation2 giant robot game, Armored Core 2: Another Age. The game will be compatible with the USB modem and broadband adapter. The game will ship in Japan this spring, retailing for 6800 yen ($58).



PS2 Sci Fi Horror Gets Date 1/26/01 15:07


Sony Japan will release its latest PlayStation2 survival horror game, Phase Paradox on Mar. 22 for 6800 yen ($58). The game follows a rescue team attempting to rescue survivors from a crashed space carrier. A violent alien infestation is discovered. Mass panic ensues.

PS2 Shipments Down 10%


Sony expects to ship 9 million PlayStation2 game consoles in the current business year to March 31, down from its previous forecast of 10 million units. The downward revision reflected a shortage of electronic components, a Sony spokesman told Reuters.
