The Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA) came into force on 1 March 2000, repealing the Data Protection Act 1984.

It sets rules for processing personal information and applies to some paper records as well as those held on computers.

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOI) was passed on 30 November 2000.

It gives a general right of access to all types of ‘recorded’ information held by public authorities, sets out exemptions from that right and places a number of obligations on public authorities.

The paper below outlines the role of the Information Commissioner’s Office under these two Acts of Parliament.
