Please visit my my Live Journal.
Awww, crap. Sorry to see you go. I see you wanted to unsubscribe; is that from e-mail delivery of various topics? Or just from this one? |
Sorry to hear that Lori. Can I friend you also? Or do I have to go through the hazing ritual first? :) |
Okay. I'll email you. |
Hah. Accidentally crossposted to Spam....
Hey, Ruthie, feel free to talk to me at my LJ. I have to get out of here for a while because there's someone who's pretty much ruining it for me. Not necessarily because he's a mean person, though he is, but because I become someone I don't like when I see him abusing other people. Some of the people here can figure out how to deal with him, but it's too hurtful to me. So--that's why I'm back for right now--I figured I should at least say why. But after this, please--email me or visit my LJ. Thanks. law |
Just in case you do check in here a few more times. I really like your live journal. |
Why do you want to leave, Lori. I'd miss you:( |
I wouldn't mind at all. ;) |
Heck no! But you'd better be careful, or I'll friend you right back!
:-) |
Do you mind being "friended?" |
Lori!
I will! |
Time and priorities.
We all have to decide what's best for ourselves. |
It's possible to do both. I do. |
Hello--
Just thought I'd mention that I'm not going to be here much anymore. I've joined the Dark Side (because they have cookies!) and gotten a Live Journal account. Come visit anytime! me |
:-) |
Ya know, if John Savage can't get through to that twit, nothing will. |
:-)
I think lots of people still say, "Blow me away." I wouldn't worry. I always like Isaac's stuff. |
You can keep the Asimovs books or pass them on. Did you enjoy them?
Gateway is the first HeeChee book, I think. I read it in 1977 but all those ideas still "blow me away." Sorry, I'm regressing into a 70s hippy. |
Hey, Ruthie--
I think I actually have read Gateway. It's the first HeeChee novel, isn't it? You know, I still have a couple of your Asimovs to send back? I'm so bad.... |
Have you read Gateway by Fred Pohl?
I bought a copy along with Brainwave to reread and didnt realize I have a 1977 edition of Gateway. I'll send the new edition of Gateway to you if you like. |
Don't worry about the cryptic note. It just said I was sending you two magazines but after I could only fit one in the envelope I scratched that part of it out.
I'm glad you liked the story. Gary really did get David Letterman down. :-) |
I finally got to read Gary's funny story in Fantasy and SF. Thanks for sending it! I think I will get a subscription.
My only worry is all the mags piling up in my house. Do you know if they do electronic subscriptions? You can send the other mag when ever it's convenient. I couldn't find the cryptic note:( and I still have the envelope. I shook out the mag but didn't find it in there either. My mom cleaned the porch so I don't think I'll find it if it fell out. My mom and I went out a lot so I didn't have as much time to paint as I thought I would but your dinosaurs are almost ready. |
Hey, Ruthie--
I'm glad you got it. I meant to email you about it but spaced it--sorry 'bout that. Did you understand my cryptic note? I was going to send you another magazine with another one of his stories, but I bought the padded mailer right there in the post office and addressed it before I realized only one magazine would fit. Let me know when you're ready and I'll send you the next one. Looking forward to the dinosaurs! law |
Hi Lori,
I got the magazine in the mail this week but haven't had a chance to read Gary's story yet. My mom was up this week. I'll get to it before the end of the weekend and I'll be sending you one of my dinosaurs soon:) How's your novel going? |
Yup, that's me. :-) |
Is it the pb one? If so, yes.
|
Hey, Ruth, do you still have my email address so you can send me your snail mail address? |
Okay, Lori. That would be great. I'd love the copy. You have extras right? If not I'll send it back when I'm done.
I hope you like dinosaurs. I'm going to send you some of mine. I still have your snail mail address but I think it's the appartment. I should get subcriptons to Asimov's and F&SF; but I'm having trouble just keeping up reading my science mags. |
Hey, Ruthie, do you want me to send you a copy? Gary's story is really short. It's only been in the March 2005 F&SF; at this point. (But I'm sure he'll have a collection someday....)
:-) law |
I'd like to read his story. I'm still trying to play catch-up with all the other things I'm in the midst of reading. I'll definitely get the year's best when I get a chance though.
|
Lori,
Thanks for contributing to the "Great and Useless" debate, and I hope you'll continue. It may very well be useless to try to convince a religious nut that atheists are people too, that superstition is not a prerequisite for morality, and so on. But I think it's great how these debates challenge us to put who we are and what we believe into words, and perhaps this makes it more difficult for the mainstream religious majority to ignore or demonize us. That is, if we can practice what we "preach" and stay rational in the face of bigotry, while standing our ground. Ty |
Thanks, all! Ruthie, I wouldn't dream of telling you not to buy the book, but just to make sure--he doesn't actually have a story in the anthology. He just got an honorable mention in the back. :-)
law |
Yes, congrats to Gary. That's great.
I'll have to go out and buy Gardner's Year's Best. |
Say congrats to Gary for me. That's so cool!
-Linz |
Congratulations, Gary! |
Outstanding! Congrats to Gary! |
Woo hoo! Go Gary!!! :^D |
Gary got an Honorable Mention in Gardner's Year's Best! |
I've been taking my vitamins, and I think I'm starting to bounce back.
One thing that helped a lot was dragging myself to workshop yesterday afternoon and getting both really helpful comments and universal "But if I was reading this in a magazine I wouldn't be surprised" about a story I really didn't know if I'd pulled off. It was a lot different than anything I've ever done and I didn't know if I had it under control. So that made me happy. law |
And no matter what the game is, if the play's the thing, then of course there's the Scottish Play. |
And if you're a chess player, the Scotch Defense works well. Until I started playing chess I thought the Scotch Defense was, "Don't drink it."
Seriously, I hope you feel better soon. --Jay Arr |
If you don't drink alcohol then try scotch eggs or scotch broth. Both work. |
Ah no, Lori, it's not possible for you to be useless. Lying about sleeping, you are at LEAST, decorative! |
Ah, but only for people who actually drink alcohol.
I've just been sleeping alot. I think I'm starting to come around. I hope so, because I've been really useless for the last two days. |
Hey Terry, Scotch works too. |
Egad! Lie down in a dark, cool, quiet room with a cold compress on your brow for a few hours. The only antidote for "interesting" family times! |
Yes, my fuzz face was a doll, mainly because he actually vacuumed before I got home. :-) But I'm still kind of out of it and not feeling that great. Too much of too much, I think. It was an interesting two weeks as only family can make something interesting.
|
But at least you made it home in one piece, and can now rest up. Resting up is good.
Say hi to the fuzzy faces for me, -Linz |
Thanks, Lori, I do know. Sounds like you've had a wonderful away-from-home-family-sightseeing time. Those are good! Did Mr. Fuzzface greet you properly when you got home? (The one with a ring on his paw, I mean) |
Hey there! Sorry for the long absence--which I just spelled "absense" and had to erase. Must mean "absent sense," which describes me pretty well right now.
Just got home after a few weeks visiting. Mostly family. The Baltimore cousins came out with their kids to visit Dad and take in the sights around Wenatchee. Surprisingly enough, there are some. Now they're in Seattle, while I, having gone up a week early to help Dad with final preparations, declared myself absent from Gary for long enough and drove home in one mondo 15-hour chunk. I kept myself awake by scratching at all the mosquito bites I got at Lake Wenatchee. Which is gorgeous and well worth a few mosquito bites. But I am glad to be home. I was away from the little fuzz face you see above for far too long, not to mention the other two smaller fuzz faces and the fuzz face I'm married to. Can you tell I'm still a bit out of it? Even after sleeping for about 11-12 hours..... I am still thinking about you, Terry. You can be sure of that. |
Hi Lori! Where ya are? |
HI!
-Sparkle Farkle |
Mine's white. |
And thus do we know our kind: anyone who didn't snicker at the previous two posts.
lol! I know - I have my favorite erasers, too! |
Thanks, Rebekah. Don't know if it's lucky, but it's familiar and a decent eraser. I'll be glad to get it back.
law |
Lori, I keep forgetting to tell you - you left a pink eraser at my house at TerryCon. Hope it wasn't your lucky eraser! Frank is going to pick something up in the next few days and I'll hand it off to him to give to you. |
That's funny, Lori but probably a good thing to leave. I'm sure they understood. Some day I'd like to be on a dinosaur panel even though I'm a self-taught paleo artist.
By reading, do you mean you read some of your stuff? I'm glad it went well. |
Hey, Ruthie--thanks. I got a few offers of help, but when I got to the panel it seemed to be in good hands so I chickened out and just left without letting them know I was supposed to be on it.
I had a reading though that went pretty well. law |
How are the submissions' readings going?
Have fun at Baycon! If you need any more historical figures let me know:) |
Yikes! Happy Belated Birthday, Lori! Congrats on getting done with your classes!
Actually, in my culture, this is Pinch Day. The day after your birthday people have license to pinch you "A pinch to grow an inch." So look out! |
Thanks again, all. It turned out to be a pretty darned good birthday. Kinda low key--I didn't get the labs done and printed up and dropped off and back home again until almost five, Bob. There was a typo in a formula in one of the labs--I kept getting garbage numbers and scaring the cats with my language. But I got that worked out, and after I got home it was too late to really plan anything so we just went to kung fu and then came home and chilled.
Now I have a couple of days to clean house and get ready for Linz and Baycon (like, um, reading the workshop submissions--don't tell Kent). |
Oh no! I missed seeing it was your birthday. Well, Happy Un-Birthday, and hope your real B-Day was a good one!
Justin |
Happy happy birthday. We thought about you several times today. |
Ohh am I too late to wish you a happy birthday?
Anyway, I'll blame the timezones. Happy Birthday, Lori. Clyde. |
Thank you for all the birthday wishes. Shameless self-promoter that I may be, you still came through with lots of cheer to cheer me up in my time of need.
And--I'M DONE! I'mdoneI'mdoneI'mdoneI'mdoneI'mdoneI'mdoneI'mdoneI'mdoneI'mdoneI'mdoneI'mdoneI'mdoneI'mdoneI'mdoneI'mdoneI'mdoneI'mdone |
Happy Happy Birthday Lori! |
Happy Birthday Lori!! Have a really great day and year!
B |
Happy Birthday! |
Happy Birthday, happy birthday (doo, doo, doo, doot doo-do). |
Thank you. The sooner I get the labs done, the sooner that could happen.
Doesn't help that I found a typo in a gnarly formula we're supposed to use.... |
Happy Birthday, LORI! |
Happy B-day Lori! |
"Today is my BIRTHDAY!" nrr nrr nrr nrr NRR nrr--
"Gotta finish LAB REPORTS!" nrr nrr nrr nrr NRR nrr-- |
No more calculus. It's a good thing. |
Now, Hermione, you KNOW you always exaggerate how difficult tests are. WE know you did JUST FINE! |
The calculus test is over.
Oh. My. God. |
Yeah, I couldn't see a damned thing and got all turned around. After driving the wrong way on Chenowyth for a while then doubling back, *then* driving the wrong way on Snell for a while and doubling back, I finally got to Blossom Hill and went the right way, for once. And Gregory was behind me all the way, bless his heart. I made some kinda dorky hand signals when I finally saw we were on the right track. I hope he got what I was trying to say.....
Gary got more snails. Eeeuuuuwwww. |
Yipes. I'm empathetic. I just couldn't see anything during my drive home. I didn't get lost, though. |
Lori! You got LOST??? OMG!! Did Gregory find his way?
*rushes off to Gregory's topic to holler for him* Oh - wait - he doesn't have a topic. Does he? I'll email him. |
Lost with you is better than lost alone!
Er, or something. Um, HI! -Sparkle Farkle |
Oh. And I was put in charge of leading Gregory from Terrycon to the freeway and got us both lost. Not a nominious day. |
Hah. The scorpions were dead. And crunchy. |
Thanks, Lori. I knew we were good for something, I just couldn't figure out what. The next time I invite a lady back to my place I'll seal the deal by offering to pick hornworms off her tomato plants. It can't miss!
--Jay Arr |
The woman who will put a scorpion in her mouth is squidged by snails? I would never have guessed. At least they weren't banana slugs, then. I'm glad Gary was able to take care of that for you. Also, don't visit here in spring.
I guess I'll see you in a few days! Whee! I'm so excited. -Linz |
Oh. My. God. I know why men are necessary now.
Gary just picked at least a hundred snails off the plants in the front. By hand. Snails. Eeeeuuuwww-eeeuuuwww-eeeuuuwww-eeeuuuwww-eeeuuuwww-eeeuuuwww-eeeuuuwww.... |
When Santa (a family cat) got fixed, she walked hunched for days, trying to hide her shaved tummy. |
She already seems perkier. I think she's feeling better. She had some bad mats in areas she wouldn't let me get to, and it turns out that we've got fleas this year. The boys only have one or two, but poor Fudge already had quite a collection. She spent a lot of time laying outside in the dirt pretending to be Jungle Princess.
So while we were at the vets we picked up some flea stuff. Bleah. I hate fleas. law |
I think they're embarrassed when they're all shorn. Seems like it takes a few weeks until their fur's partially grown back, for them to regain their usual arrogance. Poor Fudgie! |
You can give her love next week, Linz.
(YAY!) She doesn't seem as bad this time as she did last time. Last time she huddled on a chair for a week, but this time she's only huddling at night and during the day she's up and around. Main problem is that the boys freak out too--what is this strange smelling creature? We do not recognize her--and they hiss at her. Geek especially is a knee-jerk hisser. I had some of Fudge's smell on me last night and he walked past me on the bed and hissed. Then he stopped and stared at me, like, "What the f**k did I do that for?" It was actually kinda funny. law |
I posted here, I really did. Something about hugs and cats. Hmmm.. Must go for a search. |
Poor Fudgie. Give her love without touching her for me.
-Linz |
Well, that regal beauty you see in the photo above has just gotten her summer shave. She is now rather sad and goofy looking. She'll perk up once the trauma of the event wears off and she'll be adorable, but for now she needs hugs.
Except she doesn't really like them.... law |
I hate to say it, but yeah.
Let's just say I'm not taken very seriously by this crew. They came at a bad time for me; they knew it would be a bad time for me when they scheduled it and they did it anyway and still expected me to drop everything. I quit my job so I could focus on school and I am now farther behind than ever, with a week and a half of classes left. So, yeah. I'm rejoicing. |
And there was much rejoicing. |
The in-laws are gone! The in-laws are gone! |
Two more problems on the calculus test, but it's time to do a bit of cleaning in preparation for the in-laws Tuesday. I guess I can afford to take a break.
Not feeling too bad about the test so far. At least I haven't been totally lost on anything yet. law |
Uh, just *who* is that supposed to make feel better, John? |
If it makes you feel any better, a "calculus" is a kidney stone, bringing a new (and all too accurate) meaning to "passing calculus." |
...just wondering if it is actually *possible* to "have fun" with Calculus...
nonetheless..good luck on the internship search..and enjoy "be a cat" day this weekend :) B |
The finding an internship might be just me wanting a freebie tour of some cool labs at Stanford (and to get out of class for the day). We'll have to see. I need a break. I really, really need a break.
Not quite yet, though. Got the calculus takehome in hand, so I know what I'll be doing this weekend.... |
Woohoo Lori! Have fun with the writing and the calculus (?) and finding an internship. |
