This ontology manages reference data about gear types needed for the fisheries fact sheets. The type of gear installed on a vessel determines the type of fish that it can catch and therefore it is often used to determine the fleet power. The main classification of gear types is the International Standard Statistical Classification of Fishing Gear (ISSCFG). Although this classification was initially designed to improve the compilation of harmonised catch and effort data and in fish stock assessment exercises, it has also been found to be very useful for fisheries technology, fishermen training and for the preparation of specialized catalogues on artisanal and industrial fishing methods.

The Ontology contains a subset of about 400 terms highly relevant to crop wild relatives. Terms with high relevance to CWR domain are grouped into themes, roughly corresponding to AGROVOC (top level) categories, or indicatives of the thematic sources from which the terms were collected (biological, geographical on-line dictionaries etc), with an attempt to balance the number of terms between the groups. For the import into the ontology structure the themes were converted to namespaces in order to preserve the grouping and allow manipulation within ontology client programs on terms based on namespace grouping. Before the import the namespaces were slightly modified and adapted to some other existing ontologies. The ontology is available as OWL Full.

The FAO Technical Knowledge Classification Scheme was established as part of the development of the FAO Knowledge Forum (http://www.fao.org/KnowledgeForum/index_en.htm). This classification was created with the purpose of mapping FAO staff technical expertise and FAO activities. It will be used to standardize the content description of FAO information objects making them more interoperable, and thus enabling the FAO community of users to access and hopefully share the information described using the classification. The structure of the The FAO Technical Knowledge Classification Scheme has two hierarchical levels and has been mapped to the AGROVOC Thesaurus which is currently used to index information resources in all major information systems of FAO.
