Bombay Urban Transport Project (BUTP)

The first Bombay Urban Transport Project (BUTP) commenced in March 1977 and was completed in June, 1984. The total cost of BUTP was Rs.391.4 million including a US $ 25 million loan from the World Bank. MMRDA was the borrower of the loan, and Brihan Mumbai Electric Supply and Transport undertaking (BEST) and Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) were the executing agencies of the project. The project concentrated mainly on improving the bus transport system in Mumbai operated by the BEST by procuring buses, construction of flyovers, installation of traffic signals etc.

The project achievements are:

  • Procurement of 700 buses for BEST
  • Construction of five fly-overs on the main arteries of Mumbai
  • Construction / improvement of five bus depots and part of major workshop for BEST
  • Installation of new micro processor based integrated traffic signals at 77 junctions
  • Construction of pedestrian bridges and underpasses at important junctions, road/bridge widening/extensions and channelisation
  • Provision of new bus shelters and terminal.
