Who we are

We are the Information Commissioner's Office.

The Information Commissioner enforces and oversees the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA) and the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOI) .

The Commissioner is a UK independent supervisory authority reporting directly to the UK Parliament and has an international role as well as a national one.

The Information Commissioner: Richard Thomas

Richard Thomas took up the role of Information Commissioner in December 2002.  Both the Freedom of Information Act and the Data Protection Act relate to information handling and his dual role will allow the Commissioner to provide an integrated and coherent approach.
