Where Do I Start? What Is The Next Step?
What is an Addiction?
Pain of life is an unwanted intrusion. We all
experience it, and if it isn’t relieved, it can be the starting point of
an addiction cycle.
Pain of life can be caused by various things. Here are some examples:
-
Circumstances. A spouse dies – a cycle of personal failure – rejection by important people.
-
Emotions. People can feel guilt – loneliness – shame.
-
Poor self image. People can feel worthless – useless – physically unattractive – too fat – awkward.
When the pain becomes
too great a person may develop an addiction to get
relief. They might turn to things like food, drugs, alcohol, sex, etc.
and embark on a journey of overindulgence. These things become
distractions, but they only give temporary relief. However, these
attempts to mollify pain do not solve the underlying problems – they
only add to it. Once the cycle of addiction is underway and is firmly in
place, it can be hard to stop it. People in these circumstances
need outside help.
The kind of help required is spiritual and is
offered by Celebrate Recovery. It starts with turning one’s life and
will over to the care and control of Jesus Christ. The person in an
addiction cycle acknowledges they have a problem, and they have not been
able to put it under control. They recognize that Jesus Christ is their
loving Higher Power, and He will provide all the resources needed to
overcome their issues.
The person in an addiction cycle follows up by
attending weekly Celebrate Recovery meetings. In these meetings they
learn how to identify the underlying causes of their issues. They also
learn how to appropriate God’s power in eliminating them. They learn how
to forgive those who have hurt them and to make amends to all the people
they have hurt. They learn how to change their focus from
themselves to others. The result is lasting freedom and permanent
victory.
Over the years many people have gone through the
Celebrate Recovery program with incredible results. Celebrate Recovery
has a success rate much higher than conventional recovery programs. Why
not give it a try?
There is hope!
