About This Illustrated Bibliography
Science fiction fans do an incredible amount of work in
honor of the science fiction authors they admire, not to
mention all the work that goes into the many science fiction
conventions known as cons.
How lucky for us that back in 1979 Mike Bennett, already a
Cordwainer Smith fan, took on the project of organizing a
bibliography, first published as a booklet and later as a Help
File, using a program designed for creating help
files for software. The first bibliography came out before
NESFA brought out their definitive editions of the complete
works of Cordwainer Smith, in The
Rediscovery of Man and Norstrilia -- which is
to say, at a time when Cordwainer Smith's place in the history
of science fiction was arguably more tenuous than it has since
become. His bibliography made a contribution to the continuing
presence of Cordwainer Smith in public awareness.
I recently noticed a used copy of Mike's original
booklet someplace online, being offered for sale for quite
a high price. Great for collectors, but you can read it
here. Since the beginning of this website in 2000, Mike has
allowed me to put it up on cordwainer-smith.com.
I've done some editing of the pages in this section --
replacing the term help file when I've noticed it,
rearrranging the location of images, and so on. And I've
divided it into more pages. But otherwise, it is as
Mike sent it to me. Thanks again, Mike!
Readers, use the menu to find all the treasure in this
section. Specially useful may be the page about all the Cordwainer
Smith stories and all the Cordwainer Smith-only books that
they appeared in. By Cordwainer Smith-only, I mean that
anthologies are not included.
