Milestones

The Centre has made a significant mark not only in B.C., but internationally. The numerous accomplishments include:

1986
  • The John Ruedy Immunodeficiency Clinic opens as a specialty clinic for HIV infected patients.

1992
  • The Centre develops provincial HIV/AIDS Treatment Guidelines, reviewed and updated quarterly.

1994
  • An HIV/AIDS Nursing Elective is created through the School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia.

1996
  • Viral load testing is introduced for monitoring HIV disease progression and response to antiretroviral therapy.
  • B.C. becomes the first Canadian province to adopt triple drug therapy for all eligible patients in a publicly funded plan.
  • Centre research findings reveal an explosive outbreak of HIV and hepatitis C in injection drug users in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
1997
  • The Centre pioneers use of quantitative PCR as primary outcome measure in clinical trials.
  • An inter-professional Elective in HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care is created through the College of Health Disciplines at the University of British Columbia.
  • Multiple Drug Rescue Therapy is initially developed for patients failing conventional therapies.
1998
  • The Centre uses the first application of drug resistance monitoring in Canada.

2000
  • The Centre uses first application of therapeutic drug monitoring of antiretroviral drugs for HIV infection in Canada

2003
  • The John Ruedy Immunodeficiency Clinic reopens as a primary and specialty clinic for HIV-infected patients.
