The relatively small Bray Island lies at the northern edges of the Foxe Basin, located 10 km across a narrow strait from the southern coast of central Baffin Island. The eastern side of the island guards the entrance into Ikpik Bay — formed by Baffin Island's Baird Peninsula (the peninsula is at bottom-right in the image); to the northwest and southwest, respectively, are the islands of Koch and Rowley.

Bray Island measures 36 km in length (from north to south) and 26 km in width, covering an area of 689 km². Terrain on the island is extremely low-lying, with maximum elevations rarely exceeding 20 m. The network of freshwater lakes that covers much of the landscape is visually conspicuous in the above image.
